Crust Ingredients:

  • 2-2/3 cup flour
  • 1 stick butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3-6 tablespoons water
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • coarse sugar, if desired

Filling Ingredients:

  • 2 apples, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider (or apple juice) divided
  • 1/2 cup flour

Crust Directions:

Preheat oven to 350. Add flour, butter, sugar, salt and 3 tablespoons of water in a food processor. Process for 15 seconds. Add water, 1 tablespoon at a time, processing for 10 seconds after each addition until dough forms.

Divide dough in half and roll onto a floured surface. Place into the bottom of an 8×8 square pan. Top with filling. Use a brush to add egg wash to the edges of the crust.

To make top crust, roll the remaining dough onto the floured surface. Use a cutting wheel to cut 10, 1/2″ strips. Place five strips onto the top of the filling and fold back every other strip.
