It is going to be extra special this year because Angeline and Jameson are coming home for Christmas and I can't wait to see him opening presents!
Here are the ingredients you need to gather to get started making this Christmas Trifle Recipe
- You're going to begin with a box of white cake mix and the ingredients to make the cake, which usually includes just oil, water and eggs. Beginning with a cake mix base and instant chocolate pudding makes this recipe so much easier to make!
- Whipped topping, like Cool Whip!
- Don't forget the holiday shortbread cookies! They're just so much fun! You could make your own homemade Christmas cookies too, if you wanted to really get into the holiday baking spirit!
- Holiday sprinkles and red and green food color gels - I prefer to use Wilton brand!

Baker's Notes about this Red and Green Christmas Pudding Trifle Recipe
I use an 8" round baking pan to make the cakes because those cake sizes fit into my trifle bowl perfectly. If you have a larger bowl, a 9" cake might be better for you.
If you assemble this the day before, the cookies will most likely get soft, or softer. I'd recommend assembling the day of.
How to Make a Christmas Trifle Recipe
Directions for making this Colorful Festive Christmas Dessert Recipe
Prepare cake mix according to package direction. Divide batter equally into two bowls and color one bowl green and one red with food coloring gels.
Pour batter into 2 greased 8" baking pans and bake according to package directions. Cool completely.
Whisk together pudding and milk for 2 minutes until smooth. Refrigerate for 5 minutes until set.
When ready to assemble the trifle, place one cake in the bottom of the trifle pan.
Top with half of the chocolate pudding, spreading evenly.
Top with half of the whipped topping and spread evenly on top.
Sprinkle with crushed cookies so you have a full layer of cookies on the whipped topping.
Repeat layers, but place remaining whipped topping into a bag fitted with a large tip. Pipe the whipped topping on top of the pudding,
Add your holiday shortbread cookies to the dollops of whipped topping and then add on your colorful red and green holiday sprinkles!
Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve or serve immediately. This Red and Green Christmas Pudding Trifle Recipe serves 12-14.
