Why you will love our Million Dollar Cookies Recipe

The secret to our million dollar cookie recipe is the brown butter and dark brown sugar. This was inspired by our best chocolate chip cookies recipe that we shared years ago on this site, and pairs well with these Peanut Butter Chocolate bars for your dessert table.

I must have been living under a rock, because I had never heard about the whole "Million Dollar Cookie" thing at Neiman Marcus Cafe until very recently. The Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookie is a variation of a basic chocolate chip cookie recipe using ground oatmeal, nuts and a grated chocolate bar.

I that this ingredient combination sounds just a little bit familiar, am I right? A certain famous hotel has a similar recipe - the Hilton Doubletree Chocolate Chip Cookie! I recall when we heard news that the Doubletree Hotel was releasing their famous chocolate chip cookie recipe during the pandemic lockdown of 2020. We were all SO excited!

As legend has it, a woman once paid almost $300 for the recipe for the chocolate chip cookies at the cafe. However, I think that this version of those famous million dollar chocolate chip cookies is probably every bit as good!

the needed Ingredients For Million Dollar Cookies

    • Granulated sugar - just plain white sugar
    • Eggs AND Egg yolks - you will need whole eggs as well as egg yolks for this cookie recipe
    • All purpose flour

Directions for How To Make million dollar cookies

We are going to first preheat our oven to 350 degrees and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Hint: As our million dollar cookie recipes has a ton of butter, please do NOT grease your cookie sheet.

The most important part of making our Million Dollar Cookies is the browning of the butter. Take your time and pay close attention, as we want BROWN butter in this cookie recipe, and not BURNT butter.

three sticks of butter in a pan

Place your unsalted butter into a skillet or saucepan and heat it over medium heat.

whisky butter in a pan until it turns brown

Continue to whisk for about 5 to 6 minutes until the butter browns. You will see brown bits begin to form and then the butter will turn brown in color.

    butter melted in a pan

Whisk the butter frequently and cook it until it becomes a slightly brown butter. The butter will melt, bubble and froth and "puff up" in the pan.

Once your butter reaches the brown color, immediately remove it from heat and let it stand to cool for 5 minutes.

Using a 2 tablespoon portion cookie scoop, scoop your cookie dough into 48 rounds, and place them onto a cookie sheet. Refrigerate your uncooked cookie dough for about 30 minutes.

Depending on the size of your sheet, add 6-8 cookie dough balls to the baking sheet and bake for 14 minutes. Remove your cookies from the oven and let them stand to cool on the cookie sheet for 2 minutes before moving to a cooling rack to finish cooling completely.

Substitutions and Variations for our Million Dollar Cookies

There are plenty of ways to swtich up these million dollar cookies. While our home recipes are more accurately made if you follow our recipe to a t, as long as you do not stray too far from the original, everything should be okay.

    • Even more chocolate - while the star of the show is really the browned butter, dark brown sugar, and chocolate chips, you can add ½ cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips to make it even more chocolaty. You can add in regular sized chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips!
    • Deluxe - you can add sprinkles to the cookie dough to give it some pizzaz!

You might also want to check out our Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe on my website! Alternately, if you really just want a plain old sugar cookie, this White Chocolate Sugar cookie Bites recipe is really pretty easy to make and a lot of fun!

How to Store your Million Dollar Cookies

You can store your cooked million dollar cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to 5 days. You can also extend their shelf life, so to speak, by putting that airtight container in the fridge!

If you want to freeze these cookies, make sure that they are in an airtight, sealed cling wrap and aluminum foil and they should keep for up to a month. Just make sure that you defrost them all the way before serving. Those chocolate chunks will definitely do damage to your teeth if you bite into them while they are still frozen!

Top tip for the best million dollar cookies

The most important part of this recipe for million dollar cookies is the browned butter. Make sure that you use unsalted butter and keep a very close eye on the butter as it cooks! If your butter burns, just throw it out and start over. It will completely ruin the taste of the cookies if the butter is burned and not actually just lightly browned.

FAQs for baking our Million Dollar Cookies Recipe

Why do we use parchment paper to line a cookie sheet when are going to bake cookies?

We have gotten into the habit of lining a baking sheet when making cookies for a very good reason! Not only will the parchment paper help your cookies bake more evenly, but the nonstick quality of parchment paper also helps your cookies to prevent them from cracking or breaking when lifting them off the sheet.

Which chocolate chips are best for cookies?

There are just SO MANY different brands of chocolate chips and chocolate chunks on the market. While some people prefer the tried and true Nestle Tollhouse brand of chocolate chips, and some prefer lower sugar options like Enjoy Life chocolate chips - does it really matter? It does actually matter! When you are making a dessert recipe, try to use a brand of chocolate chips that are semi-sweet or bittersweet for the best taste. A lot of store brand or no name brands of chocolate chips are mostly filler ingredients and you can really taste the difference in the finished product of your baking recipe.

Welcome to the world of Million Dollar Cookies! These delicious, buttery cookies are sure to be a hit in your household. With just a few simple ingredients, you can whip up a batch of these chewy, rich treats in no time. Whether you are looking for a sweet treat to serve at a party or just want a delicious snack, this Million Dollar Cookies recipe is the perfect solution.
