Who doesn’t love to travel? See the world, visit the cultural hotspots, lounge on beaches, climb mountains, and party where no one has ever partied before! It’s the dream lifestyle.
But travelling is expensive. Getting the money together to book flights and hotels can be tough, and often it can feel like you’re leaving your life behind. What happens when you get back? What do you do with the hole in your CV?
Never fear. There are plenty of ways to get out and see the world without blowing through savings and disconnecting from reality completely. Check out the list below for some top tips.
Blogging and Freelance Work
What if you had the kind of job you could do absolutely anywhere (at least, anywhere with a WiFi connection). The world would be your oyster!
Well, you’re in luck. There are several ways to make a living doing freelance work online. First and foremost - blogging.
All you need is a niche area to blog about (something like, oh I don’t know...travel!?) and a personal spin on the perspective your providing. So you don’t just write travel, you write about eco-travel! Alternative travel! Travelling on a budget! You get the idea...
Once you’ve got a blog set up, you need to start pushing out the content hard and fast. Market yourself in the right places (social media is a good place to start) and to your target audience. Get in touch with companies you can work with, selling products or experiences you believe in.
Once you have your own blog and proven track record, you can start writing for other people and will be able to push your rates up. Do a couple of sessions in the morning and evening, and you can get a steady income rolling in to fund the trip of a lifetime.
Online Study
Okay, here’s a different scenario. Perhaps you’re in the wrong career. You need to get out, take a break, retrain, and come back refreshed. So how can you travel and make the transition from one career to another, all without leaving your life behind?
Answer: online study. Online training and degrees have become increasingly popular in the last few years, as more and more people look for cheaper and more flexible alternatives to college fees and schedules.
Want to complete an MBA whilst chilling in Mexico? Look into universities who offer an MBA online. There’s no need to put your life on hold whilst working towards a qualification any longer. It’s 2019!
Working or Volunteering Abroad
Perhaps you want to get off the laptop and integrate into the cultures of the places you visit. No worries - there are options here too.
Check out an organisation like WWOOF, which offers placements all over the world on organic farms, eco-settlements, and within alternative communities. Technically you work as a volunteer, but almost all of the placements will provide free room and board in exchange for your help on the farm. It’s a great way to travel and meet like-minded people without breaking the bank.
Alternatively, companies like Workaway can help set you up with paid jobs in over 178 different companies. It might be less of a holiday and more of a work-away experience (as the title would suggest), but it’ll leave you with some money in the bank and something to put on the CV when you get home.
And there we have it! Hopefully these ideas will help get the ball rolling on your travel plans, without leaving you adrift from life at home.
