Slow Cooker Sweet Hawaiian Teriyaki Meatballs Recipe

I remember when I first began going to sushi restaurants - I am allergic to shellfish and could only eat things like the Spicy Tuna Roll and chicken teriyaki...I had never even had Chicken Teriyaki until my mid-20s!

Now I love the flavor and while this isn't chicken, it is still a super fun twist on the flavor, and who doesn't just love meatballs?! This sweet Slow Cooker Sweet Hawaiian Teriyaki Meatballs Recipe is really more of an appetizer recipe.

But it can also easily be served as a lunch or dinnertime meal with a simple side of rice and veggies. You can even throw them on a Hawaiian roll to make a sandwich and serve it up with a nice side salad.

The flavor combination between the pineapple preserves and the teriyaki lends a really fun twist and the ketchup and garlic keeps it from being too sweet. They are just delicious all the way around!

Don't they look delicious? They remind me of the Swedish Meatballs people used to make in a slow cooker for office parties.

Or those grape jelly and ketchup meatballs that are such a holiday party staple. I remember I used to sit there at the crockpot towards the end of the party and just pick them out one by one. I didn't even bother with a plate at that point! Ha ha!

Could I use crushed pineapple instead of the preserves?

Yes, but it will not have the same amount of sweetness.

Can you do this with homemade meatballs instead of those gross frozen ones?
I make most everything from scratch.

Can I make this with a pineapple red pepper preserves? That’s all I could find in the store.

You can use a substitution, but it will change the flavor. Let me know how it goes!

What size slow cooker did you use?

It is an 8 quart slow cooker! 🙂

I'm confused. Throughout the article you are referring to Instant Pot or slow cooker interchangeably. They are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Which is it?

    12. Jenn says

      November 26, 2022 at 9:40 am

An Instant Pot has a slow cooker feature.

Are the meatballs cooked already? I usually purchase Trader Joes cooked frozen cocktail meatballs.

      June 08, 2023 at 8:58 am

Yes, these are frozen cooked meatballs. What you got will work perfectly!

What will happen if I make my own meatballs from scratch and put them in unfrozen to the slow cooker?

    16. Jennifer says

      March 02, 2024 at 8:55 am

I think that you could use homemade meatballs, but I would definitely reduce the cooking time to maybe 2 hours? Since the recipe was made using frozen meatballs, it takes a long longer to cook those! My fear is that if you cook homemade meatballs for too long, they will fall apart.

    17. Elaine Vitelli says

      March 25, 2024 at 2:30 pm

Doesn't the original recipe call for an 18 oz. jar of pineapple preserves, using 1/2 cup of that only in the "sauce" part of the recipe in the beginning of the cooking process, and then adding the remainder of the jar after the meatballs have been cooking for 5 plus hours?

    18. Jennifer says

      March 25, 2024 at 3:32 pm

I am not sure what original recipe you are referring to - we added 1/2 cup of the preserves as mentioned in the recipe and that was all. Many people make slow cooker meatballs different ways, so you may be thinking of someone else's recipe.

If I make these the day before an event, how should I heat them up before serving them?

    20. Jennifer says

      November 16, 2024 at 2:40 pm

I would recommend putting them on the stove at medium and cook them until they are hot again - it should take about 10 mins.

Slow cook time was way too long. I did 2 hours on high, and they were more than done, some were cooked hard. Next time I will do two hours on low, if that.
