This Shepherd's Breakfast Skillet Recipe is absolutely divine! This is absolutely a complete meal all on its own, with the perfect blend of protein, carbs and dairy. But of course, you can add a little fresh fruit and some freshly made biscuits with jam alongside it if you like!
It reminds me a bit of a breakfast skillet that I used to order at Denny's way back in the day, but this is even better because you can customize it with whatever kind of cheese, proteins and seasonings you prefer!
What Is A Shepherd's Breakfast Skillet?
This hearty breakfast goes by a lot of different names. You might call it a country breakfast skillet or a lumberjack breakfast. A shepherd's breakfast is kind of like a cowboy breakfast - you cook all the breakfast ingredients in a cast iron skillet.
This shepherd's breakfast skillet really is an entire meal in one pan. It has protein (eggs), carbs (potatoes), spices, and dairy. And it's super easy to customize, too.

Directions for how to make this Shepherd's Breakfast Skillet
Here are some step-by-step pictures showing you how I made this simple breakfast skillet.
Add oil, frozen hash browns, salt, garlic powder and pepper to a skillet and stir.
Cook over medium high heat, stirring occasionally until potatoes begin to brown. About 10-12 minutes.
Add in your bacon bits and spread them evenly throughout the potatoes in the cast iron skillet.
Spread potatoes evenly into the pan and use the back of a spoon or measuring cup to create 6 divots in the potatoes.
Add 1 egg in each divot.
Season with salt and pepper and sprinkle with cheese.
Cover and heat for 5-10 minutes depending on how done you'd like your egg yolk.
Remove your Shepherd's Breakfast Skillet Recipe from the heat. Top with chopped fresh parsley and serve it up immediately.
Our Best Tips for Making A Shepherd's Breakfast Skillet
See? It's such an easy recipe! Here are a few extra tips that will help you as you make it.
Use Regular Bacon
If you don't want to use bacon bits, just use regular bacon, and make sure to dice the bacon and cook it in the pan. Drain the grease and then add the hash browns to the pan with just a little of the leftover bacon grease and continue onward with the recipe.
This will add a lot more bacon flavor to the dish as well - we all know how amazing bacon fat is to cook with, don't we?
Cook The Eggs How You Like Them
Also, I would have preferred a little runny yolk in my eggs. I cooked them for 10 minutes and would suggest 5-6 for a runny yolk, or to at least check after 5 minutes.
