    Directions

All of the steps are listed in the printable recipe card. But if you need to see how it's made, here are some step-by-step pictures.

First, preheat oven to 400 and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll one pastry sheet and use a rolling pin to shape it into a 10" x 15" rectangle. Place onto the parchment paper.

A sheet of raw puff pastry dough on a baking sheet

Spread the hazelnut spread onto the puff pastry in a thin layer.

Spreading nutella on a sheet of unbaked puff pastry dough

Unroll the second pastry sheet and using a rolling pin, shape it into a 10"x 15" rectangle and place on top of the hazelnut spread.

Use a knife to cut the rectangle into a large triangle.

Cutting the puff pastry dough into triangles

To get both sides the same, cut one side and flip the scrap piece over to the other side to use as a template.

Cutting the puff pastry dough into more triangles

With the scrap pieces, use small cookie cutters to cut stars and ornament shapes out of the pastry. Set aside.

Using mini cookie cutters to cut out Christmas shapes

Place 2 knives on the puff pastry in the center as a guide. Using a knife, cut 1" wide strips into each side of the triangle, stopping at the knife guide.

Slicing the puff pastry into one-inch strips

Repeat on the other side. Remove the knives.

Using your fingers, pick up each strip and twist two to three times.

Twisting the puff pastry where the slits were sliced

Gently place back onto the parchment paper. Repeat until all of the cut strips are twisted.

Brush with beaten egg and top with scrap cutouts to look like a tree. Brush the top of the cut outs with remaining egg.

Brushing the Christmas tree with butter

Sprinkle coarse sanding sugar on top of the tree.

Adding the puff pastry Christmas decorations to the Christmas Tree

Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before serving.

    Serving Size

This Nutella Christmas Brunch Idea makes one Christmas tree, which will serve roughly 6 to 8 people.

    Variations

There are a lot of different ways to make a puff pastry Christmas tree. I filled mine with Nutella, but you could fill yours with your favorite type of fruit jam.

Another variation would be to dust some powdered sugar on top to look like snow and add some sprinkles to look like lights.

    Storage

Can you make a puff pastry dessert ahead of time? I don't recommend storing it in the refrigerator for more than a day. After about a day, the puff pastry isn't as crispy, it begins to soften.

Store your puff pastry Christmas tree in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a day.
