Trifles are always a delicious idea for dessert, but this Halloween Graveyard Dessert Trifle Recipe takes the cake - and yes, the pun is totally intended!
What Is A Halloween Trifle?
A dessert trifle is a layered recipe, often made with cookies and custard. So, a Halloween trifle is layers of chocolate cake and chocolate pudding. To go with the Halloween theme, I made it look like a graveyard!
There is a lot of room for creativity in this recipe. Add more edible grave stones, or don't add the skeleton. Have fun with it!

Quick Overview of how to make our Graveyard Dessert Trifle
Here's a super-quick overview of the recipe. All the exact steps are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Making a Halloween graveyard trifle is super simple! Just make the chocolate cake and cupcakes and let then cool to room temperature.
Then, make and set the chocolate pudding.
Next, cut the chocolate cake in half, placing one half in the bottom of your trifle dish. Top with some chocolate pudding and whipped topping. Crush up some Oreos and add them on top of the whipped topping.
Repeat layers, ending with the whipped topping. Crush 15 cookies into fine crumbs for dirt.
When you get to the top layer, you're ready to have more fun! Decorate with the skeleton, make the coconut the grass, and decorate a Milano cookie as a headstone.
Decorate with candy corn, candy pumpkins and candy rocks. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Cake Tip
I like to use one round cake and cut it in half. That way, the cake-to-pudding-to-whipped cream ratio is better. I use the remaining batter to make 12 cupcakes.
The 8” round fits into my trifle bowl almost perfectly, but each bowl is a little different.
