When it comes to something as time-consuming as hair removal, a good balance of efficiency and simplicity is key. Epilators and waxing are two of the most thorough hair removal methods you can use at home. But you might be stuck wondering which better, and what advantages / disadvantages come with each. No one wants to spend precious hours of their day or hundreds of pounds to get smooth. Even if you’re only looking to remove hair from a small area, time and cost are still a factor. Add in pain and it’s understandable that people want maximum results with minimal investment. Now, it’s quiet well accepted that shaving is a standard. It’s how most of us enter the world of hair removal. If you’ve got a razor and some gel or cream, you’re good to go. Unfortunately, there are a few drawbacks to this time-tested old shaving method - ingrown hairs, cuts, missed patches, odd angles, and having to keep on top of refills and replacements. It can always seem that no matter how thorough you were, an embarrassing missed spot or two ends up revealing itself later. And everyone’s had the nightmare of running out of shaving lubricant right when you need it.
Epilator vs Wax for Hair Removal
Epilators and waxing are the two options you need to consider when planning hair removal. While both involve pulling hair out by the root, the way they achieve this is quite different. Waxing involves the spreading of warm, specialized wax to the areas of hair - upper lip, legs, eyebrows, etc. - then pulling off the wax after its cooled with a small cloth. This removes the wax and any hair stuck to it.
Epilators, on the other hand, are a modern invention to the constant problem that is body hair regrowth. Similar to an electric shaver, it removes hair as it’s run across the skin. A rotating head of tweezers traps and pulls the hair out, much like wax but without the mess.
So, which one should you spend your money on?
Cost Considerations
Waxing is never not time-consuming or costly. You have to book an appointment, sit there anywhere from ten minutes to over one or two hours depending on what you need done, then pay upwards of a few hundred dollars. This happens every time you get it done! If you want to be smooth from top to tail, it won’t take long for the cost to add up.
Purchasing a top rated epilator might seem pricey up front, but you’re saving money in the long run. The additional bonus is that you won’t have to replace it for at least a year. Plus, as technology gets better and used by a wider audience, lower price point models always start coming to the market.
Think About Time
As stated above, waxing takes time. Factor in traffic, errands, and anything else you might have to do in a day, it can be easy to neglect regular appointments. Time is its own currency these days and no one ever feels like they have enough of it.
Sitting on a table to have hair pulled out of you can feel wasteful, especially if you the aesthetician does a bad job. You leave feeling poorer, frustrated, and with less time to do something else on your day off.
Using an epilator, you don’t go anywhere. You can sit, watch tv, and snack while smooth your legs and arms. Sure, you can wax at home, but you’ll invariably miss spots and have to worry about clean up once you're done. In under an hour with an epilator, your legs and arms will feel like silk.
Effectiveness for Epilators and Wax
Both options, be it waxing or an epilator, are incredibly effective. There’s a reason humanity has been waxing for hundreds of years. The issue with waxing is that it flattens out the hair which can make it difficult to completely pull out from the root. This would obviously require put new wax over the section and stripping the hairs that were left over. With a good epilator, all you need to do is run it back over the area another time. Wet hair will weigh down hair like how wax flattens, so if you want to limit how much you backtrack with an epilator, simply use it on dry skin.
Pain Tolerance
Unfortunately, neither of these methods are painless. When you’re ripping out hair from its root, it’s bound to hurt a little. Some people find waxing more painful while others believe using an epilator is worse. Either way, their each the best option to get yourself as smooth as possible.
Switching to an Epilator
Once you look at the comparisons above, it’s easy to see that epilators are the modern successors of the waxing era.
It’s a mechanized tool that can be used in the comfort of your own home without any cleanup or additional cost after purchasing it.
If two products solve the same problem but one is cheaper, easier to use, and does just as good of a job, why would you not choose that one?
The future of hair removal has arrived!
