In the 1970s and 80s, new parents often announced the news of their little one’s arrival by buying a couple of boxes of generic baby announcement cards and filling in the basic information about their infant.

By the 1990s, however, these announcements became a bit more personal, with new moms and dads opting to include a photo of their newborn, along with his or her name and other pertinent information.

Fast forward to today and photo birth announcements are as popular as ever — so much so that they even have their own current trends and styles.

4 Design Trends in Baby Announcements for 2020

If you're getting ready to send out baby announcements — and, if you are, let us offer you our enthusiastic congratulations! — and you wish to select a card that reflects current trends in this niche market, then check out the following suggestions:

    1. Black and White

Announcements that feature a black and white photo of your infant, along with a crisp and clean black font, are definitely popular right now. To create a black-and-white announcement, take an existing adorable photo of your infant and edit it on your smartphone. To do so, use the edit feature in your smartphone camera app.

Or, you could always shoot some new photos with the black and white option enabled on your smartphone. The latter option allows you to see what each photo will look like when it's printed on the card. To keep the image as crisp as possible, dress your baby in a simple outfit, with a pattern like stripes or polka dots, and keep the background as uncluttered as possible.

    2. Nursery-Inspired Cards

You've probably spent a lot of time planning and decorating your baby’s nursery. To carry this theme a bit further, many new parents are opting for a birth announcement that ties in the room’s décor. For instance, if you have a moon and stars theme in the nursery, you can choose the same type of design for the card. Dress your baby in a onesie featuring a large star on the front, with the text of the card announcing the arrival of the new “star” of your family.

    3. A “Rainbow” Baby

A “rainbow baby” is a term that refers to a healthy infant who was born after his or her parents suffered the loss of a child from a miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. A current trend in 2020 is for the grateful parents to recognize and honor their new addition with a birth announcement that includes a rainbow in some shape or fashion. Indeed, such heartfelt birth announcements let people know your infant is a rainbow baby in a beautiful yet subtle way.

    4. Farmhouse Shabby Chic

In the world of interior decorating, the farmhouse look is popular right now, as is the use of lots of grays and whites. If you adore this style, incorporate it into your birth announcement, starting with a rustic and shabby chic felt letter board that you can use to list your baby’s name, weight and length, and birthdate. Set the board next to your infant and add some wildflowers or a vintage-looking pickup truck and you'll have a stylish-looking birth announcement that people will be proud to display on their refrigerator.

Have Fun Designing and Sending Your Announcements

Birth announcements from decades past may have been easy to fill out and send, but they definitely lacked any style or personality. Thanks to these four trendy suggestions, you can send out a great looking and meaningful birth announcement that shares your joyous news in an on-point and fashionable design.
