For most people, watches are no longer necessary - smartphones have rendered them obsolete. Rather than checking a watch throughout the day, seemingly everyone in the younger generations checks their phones. Rather than paying attention to the time, apps and alarms make things easy.
Even so, you should still wear a watch. There are benefits that a smartphone can’t replace, and aspects of how you spend your time that you’ve forgotten since shoving your watch to the back of a drawer. Here are some of the reasons to wind it back up.
Timeless Accessory Piece
Irony aside, watches will always be a timeless accessory piece. They’re versatile and functional, with options for every occasion. You can find a variety of ladies watches at various price points and infinite styles that serve as a tiny detail that brings an outfit together. Interchangeable wrist straps create an accessory that can be changed to match other accessories, or you can stick with an old favorite that goes with everything.
Fashionistas know that it’s not an outfit that creates the style; it’s the finer details that elevate your outfit from nice to fabulous. A watch can be the cherry on top of a style sundae.
No Phone? No Problem
People have become largely dependent on the existence of their phone. Map reading is a thing of the past, and the thought of being out of contact is unimaginable at best. Contrary to popular belief, there are times when using a phone isn’t appropriate. You may not have the opportunity to look at your phone when you have back-to-back meetings or have to leave a conference early to pick up your kids from school.
Wearing a watch allows you to be on track during those periods when taking a phone out isn’t appropriate or an option.
Be More Present
Checking your phone also presents another problem: it’s full of distractions. If you have a chance to check the time on your phone during your important meeting, are you going to be able to resist the temptation of reading the message notifications you’ve received while your phone was on silent? Even if you’re at your desk working away, checking the time on your phone can lead to checking your Facebook, looking at Instagram, and making plans for the weekend.
Having a watch gives you more opportunity to put your phone away and succeed at everything you have to get done throughout the day. People spend an average of 135 minutes on social media every day - that’s more than two hours. The same people “don’t have time” to improve their fitness or education, opting instead of mediocrity while scrolling. Unplug, wear a watch, and don’t spend a month of your year on Facebook.
Social Perceptions
While many of us try to override social perceptions and be authentic, the unfortunate reality is that social perceptions continue to play a role in our daily lives. How does wearing a watch tie into this? Wearing a nice watch exudes a sense of success, especially when wearing a recognizable luxury watch - a powerful status symbol. People perceive those who wear watches as having it together. They’re seen as smarter, great with time management, and both worthy of respect and respectful of others.
Watches can be a powerful way for a woman to shake up social perceptions as well. Whereas men tend to be more open with showcasing their success, women have long been taught to hide theirs. Wearing a watch, particularly a large, eye-catching luxury watch, is a subtle way to showcase a woman’s success without feeling as though she’s forgotten her sense of humility.
Maintenance
If you have a nice watch that you’ve been neglecting, you could be causing it to die long before its time. Some watches need to be wound on a regular basis. This is especially true of designer and luxury watches which are made with traditional movements rather than battery powered. Regular winding is required to keep the watch running for years down the road and ensure accurate timekeeping.
In addition to the practicality of wearing a watch that you’ve invested your hard-earned money in, you need to be willing to maintain that investment. Luxury watches, in particular, have a high resale value and retain their value for decades. Some even become more valuable as time goes on, as long as you keep it in prime condition.
If you’re not ready to put your watch back on yet, be sure to wind it on a regular basis. Even winding an unworn watch once a week can help maintain its quality over the years.
Wearing a watch checks all the boxes. It’s practical, functional, fashionable, and even a little political. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that these traditional timepieces have been rendered obsolete by modern technology. Some things will never be replaced, and watches make that list.
