How long does it take to make these 4th of July JELLO cups?
When you are leaning how to make red white and blue JELLO shots, keep in mind that these are a bit of a process. You have to let each color harden in the fridge for about an hour.
So with the waiting for each color, this JELLO shots 4th of July recipe takes about 3 and a half hours to make from start to finish.
3 hours of that time is merely waiting for the red and blue JELLO shots to harden in the fridge - so you can use that time in between layers to do other things!
How to Make Red White and Blue JELLO Shots
Here are the Ingredients that you will need to make our Red White and Blue JELLO Shots
- 1 large package, 6 oz, blue JELLO (we used berry blue JELLO flavor for that bright blue color)
- 1 large package, 6 oz, red JELLO (we used cherry flavor JELLO for the red because it is nice and dark)
- cups water
- 1 can, 14 oz, sweetened condensed milk
- 2 packets, 0.25 oz each, unflavored gelatin
- whipped topping like Cool Whip (make sure that it is completely defrosted before you begin making these 4th of July JELLO Shots)
- red, white and blue sprinkles - You can use regular sprinkles or jimmies, whichever you prefer.
- small, 3 oz, cups and tiny spoons
TOP TIP You might be wondering, " Is there white JELLO ?" because we are showing a white layer next to the red gelatin and blue layered JELLO. Nope! As far as I have found, there are no brands that make a white gelatin. So we are using sweetened condensed milk to make the white JELLO flavor.

Directions for how to make our 4th of July JELLO shots with sweetened condensed milk
Now let's get started making these super fun July 4 JELLO shots! You are going to begin by preparing your fridge!
You are going to want to go ahead and clear a space in your refrigerator for 2 regular size muffin pans. I know that this might seem like a silly part of the directions - but keep in mind that muffin tins are pretty large AND you can not stack them on top of each other. We need lots of room for the shot glasses too. Lay the dessert cups in the muffin tin at an angle.
Remember, you are going to be layering the JELL-O in the dessert cups, so you are going to want to make sure that the layers come out nice and pretty!
Now let's begin with the real step by step directions for how to make two color JELLO shots.
In a large measuring cup with a spout, add 1 cup of boiling water and then stir in 1 package of your berry blue JELLO. Mix it together really well, for about 2 minutes, or until all of the JELLO is completely dissolved.
Now add in 1 cup of cold water and mix it together well. Make sure that it is completely combined.
Next we are going to pour a small amount of the berry blue JELLO liquid into each 3 ounce cup. Lay the shot glass at an angle in the muffin tin. Refrigerate our JELLO shots until they are firm - this should take about an hour.
In a clean measuring bowl with a spout, add ½ cup of cold water and the 2 packages of unflavored gelatin. Mix them together until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Let the unflavored gelatin set for about 5 minutes or until it is thick.
Now you are going to stir in 1 and ½ cups of boiling water and mix it together until the liquid is completely smooth. Then you are going to pour in the sweetened condensed milk and mix it together well. Let the unflavored gelatin and sweetened condensed milk mixture set aside to cool.
Remove the muffin tins from the refrigerator and tilt then tilt the shot glass cups in the opposite direction. Fill each shot glass cup with the sweetened condensed milk gelatin mixture and return the muffin tins to the refrigerator so that they can firm up, which should take about an hour.
Remove the muffin tins from the refrigerator and stand them up on a flat surface, or place the shot glasses right side up into a 9x13 baking pan.
We are almost there! I know that this Red White and Blue JELLO Shots recipe takes a lot more work than most of our recipes, but it is worth it! They are just so cute and if you are having a party, your guests will be so impressed!
In a large measuring cup with a spout, we are going to add 1 cup of boiling water and then stir in 1 package of our red JELLO. Mix this up well, for about 2 minutes, or until the red JELLO is completely dissolved in the boiling water. Add in 1 cup of cold water and mix it together well.
Now, we are going to pour the red JELLO mixture into your JELLO shot glasses, filling them to the top of the little cups. Refrigerate your Red White and Blue JELLO Shots until they are firm, which should take about an hour.
Before serving your Red White and Blue JELLO Shots, top them with a little bit of whipped topping and red, white and blue sprinkles.
This red white and blue JELLO shots recipe makes 30, 3oz cups.
Can you make these Red White and Blue JELLO Shots ahead of time?
You can actually make these 4th of July JELLO Shots up to a few days ahead of time. Just make sure that you do not add the whipped topping and sprinkles until the day that you serve them.
If you are not familiar with whipped topping, it has a tendency to like...melt, after a while. And if you add the sprinkles too far ahead of serving these JELLO shots, they will actually bleed into the whipped topping. Honestly it will just be a huge mess if you add the finishing touches before you are ready to serve them.
Now let's talk about how to make BOOZY Red White and Blue JELLO Shots!
I think that these are absolutely fantastic just as they are, because EVERYONE can enjoy them during your 4th of July party. BUT if you would like to make them with alcohol, I recommend that you use vodka as the liquor.
To make this red, blue and white JELLO shots recipe with vodka, you are just going to make one simple switch. When you are making the blue JELLO, you are going to do one of the following things:
If you want a VERY strong JELLO shot, you are going to replace the one cup of cold water with 1 cup vodka.
If you want a lower alcohol content, use half of a cup of cold water and half of a cup of vodka.
A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT ALCOHOL IN JELLO SHOTS
If you have kids in your home, or are planning to make these Red White and Blue JELLO Shots for a gathering where children will be in attendance, please do something to make the difference between your nonalcoholic JELLO shots and the ones with alcohol very, very clear.
I recommend switching the red and blue colors in the nonalcoholic version of these 4th of July JELLO shots. Think of this little chant when you are trying to remember which one is nonalcholic:
Red on top, and the kids can have a lot!
I mean, the kids can't have ANY of the ones with vodka in them. But this will help you remember which is which!
It is also a great idea to have nonalcoholic JELLO shots at your 4th of July party for those that don't drink alcohol, and for the designated drivers at your party.
