This Red White and Blue Cake Bars Recipe is an easy and tasty "cookie cake" bar recipe. Although the base of this recipe is a cake mix, it's really more of a cookie bar recipe...but we are going to call it a Cake Bar Recipe today for the purpose of this blog post because I already have a Patriotic Shortbread Bars Recipe on the blog!
I am just trying to keep things varied, ya know? Plus...cake just always seems a little more fun to serve at holiday gatherings, don't you think?
Why We love this Red White and Blue Cake Bars Recipe
This Red White and Blue Cake Bars Recipe is going to become one of your go-to recipes not only for Memorial Day, but for the 4th of July, Veteran’s Day and Labor Day as well! It’s literally perfect for every single American holiday we have!
Now, I know that some don’t like the idea of “celebrating” Memorial Day, but for myself, as a former Marine wife and Army daughter, I believe in celebrating the lives of the men and women in uniform who have sacrificed their lives for the American ideal and our continuing freedoms.
Yes, I said freedomS, as in plural. Because regardless of where we may be as a country at this moment in time, we have more freedom than most, and I think that we should all really take a moment to reflect on that.
So, what do you think? Isn't this Memorial Day Cake Bars Recipe so cute and festive? It is so easy to make, especially since you are using a boxed cake mix instead of making the cake part of the recipe from scratch.
Cake mix cookies were all of the rage a few years ago, and I am so grateful that they were because it's made baking all sorts of cookies and bars so much easier and less time consuming!
If you have children, even your kids could even help with this recipe, as it is so simple and quick! Let them have a little fun in the kitchen with mom and dad and feel like they're part of the party planning!

Directions for making this Red White and Blue Cake Bars Recipe
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and grease a 9x13 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray, then set it aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the boxed cake mix, egg, milk and oil and mix it together well until a stiff dough forms.
Gently fold in the white chocolate chips and 1 cup of the M&M candies. Be careful not to break up the chocolate chips or the M&Ms, as you will want nice, whole pieces to show up in the final product.
Next, you will gently fold in all but 1 tablespoon of the red, white and blue jimmies. That remaining tablespoon will be reserved for sprinkling on top of the dough before putting it into the oven.
Press the dough into your greased, prepared pan and top it with the remaining red, white and blue M&Ms candies and jimmies. Bake your cake bars for 25-28 minutes or until they are golden brown and the center is set. You can use a wooden toothpick to insert into the middle to check - if it comes out clean, they are done! If there is any batter stuck to the toothpick, they need a little more time in the oven.
Allow them to cool completely before cutting them into 32 bars. Make sure that they are completely cooled, otherwise they will crumble and fall apart as you cut them! We want nice, clean edges for our cookie cake bars!
