This Cheese Stromboli is just such a hardy, tasty, and SIMPLE handheld meal that really hits the spot when I want some classic comfort food. Yes, I do consider Italian food to be comfort foods!
A calzone is folded in half, and the edges are pinched together. It is sealed, and more of like a hot pocket, so to speak.
Stromboli is more of like, a well it is like burrito.
Now, this Cheese Stromboli with ham is different than the usual Pepperoni and cheese stromboli that you are probably used to buying at Sbarro's in the mall food court. And, yes, I know we all love that place and make stops there every time we are in the mall!
It is so simple and delicious that you are probably going to add it to your list of favorite quick and easy recipes!
I strongly suggest that you have honey mustard on hand for dipping, as it really adds a punch of savory sweetness that makes the flavor of the ham and cheese POP! But of course, it is also incredibly tasty and satisfying without any dipping sauces at all.

Instructions for how to make our Ham and Swiss Stromboli
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and line an ungreased baking sheet with parchment paper. Next, unroll your refrigerated French bread dough on the lined baking sheet. Place the deli ham slices in the center of the dough, overlapping the pieces and placing within 1" of the ends of the dough.
Be sure not to go all the way to the ends, as you are going to need a piece of empty dough at the ends in order to pinch them together and seal your stromboli.
Top the ham slices with your diced onion. Make sure that the onions are diced really small - see in the photo how tiny they are?
This ensures that you get the flavor of the onions without having to actually bite into a big chunk of onion and getting that bitter taste because if the onions are too large, they will not cook all the way through and will still be a big raw.
Then you are going to add the sliced swiss cheese, making sure that the slices are overlapping a tad bit. See the above photo for visual guidance.
Once you have laid out all of the sliced deli ham, sliced swiss cheese, and of course, the onions, you are going to fold the long sides of the dough into the center and then pinch the seams together.
Fold the ends under and then using a sharp knife, cut slits into the top of the dough.
Bake your ham and swiss stromboli recipe for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Allow it to cool for a few minutes, and then cut it into slices and serve with honey mustard dipping sauce.

So easy and yummy! I actually drizzled just a little honey mustard between the ham and cheese when building the stromboli eliminating the need for the 'dip'. It was a hit!
