Bakers notes about this Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake Donuts Recipe
Just a little side note here: The peanut butter on the top doesn't set up, it remains silky and sticky.
So if you plan on transporting these donuts to a potluck or family breakfast gathering, you will want to keep them in a single layer, or if you layer them in a container, you'll need to be prepared that the peanut butter will probably stick to the donut sitting on top of it.
Wax paper? Nope. Parchment paper? Nope. THEY WILL SICK TO ANYTHING! Consider yourself warned.
Baked Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake Donuts Recipe
Donut Ingredients:
- 1 box, 15.25 oz, chocolate cake mix
- 2 tablespoons of PB2 Powdered Peanut Butter
- 1 cup of water
- ¼ cup of vegetable oil
- 1 egg
Glaze Ingredients:
- 3 cups of powdered sugar
- ½ cup of cocoa powder
- ¼ cup of half and half
- 2 teaspoons or pure vanilla extract
- ¼ cup of peanut butter
Donut Directions:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray a donut pan with nonstick cooking spray. Please note, even if it says NON-STICK, we all know how that goes. Spray it anyway.
In a large mixing bowl, add the cake mix and water, oil, egg and powdered peanut butter and whisk the mixture until it is completely combined.
Pour your batter into a gallon size resealable bag and snip the tip of the bag. Pipe the batter into the prepared pan, just about half way full.
Please make note - if you overfill the muffin tin, the donuts will be uneven and misshapen once they are baked. Remember, they rise during the baking process!
If your donut pan is dark, you will need to bake your donuts at 325 for 11-13 minutes. If the donut pan is not dark, bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes.
Once they are done, set them aside to cool down completely. This is very important for the next step...the dipping!
Glaze Directions:
Whisk powdered sugar and cocoa powder together. Add half and half and vanilla and whisk well until smooth. Dip donuts, straight into the glaze, twist to coat.
Lift out of the glaze and let excess drip for a second. Place onto a wire rack to set. Repeat until all donuts are coated. If necessary, dip twice after the first coat of glaze has set.
Place peanut butter in a small dish and microwave for 10 seconds. Mix well until smooth and runny. Place into a small, resealable sandwich bag, and snip the tip.
Drizzle peanut butter on the donuts.
