5 Places to Visit in Europe in 2023
Europe is a great place to visit with so many incredible cities worth visiting. Europe is one of the best places to visit when it comes to history, culture, food and architecture and there are destinations for every type of traveler.
I already have a week-long birthday trip planned to Barcelona with my boyfriend this year! I have been to Barcelona a few times already, both with my daughter, my myself, and with friends. It is absolutely my favorite city in the world, but I am always looking for new places to explore and I am even checking for inexpensive day trips to other places while we are there in April!
With so many options, it is hard to know where to pick. Here are a few ideas for a European getaway this year that are different from the most popular destinations.
Plan a Trip to Athens, Greece
Athens is one of the best places to visit in Europe and somewhere that everyone should visit at some point. Not only are you able to enjoy the gorgeous Greek climate here, but Athens is also one of the most important historical destinations in the world as the heart of Ancient Greece.
This means that there are amazing highlights to discover here on a European holiday, including the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Tara Canyon & Pluzine, Montenegro
Montenegro is criminally overlooked as a holiday destination, which means that it can be a lot quieter than the more popular destinations. Located on the Adriatic coastline, Montenegro packs a lot into a small amount of space with dramatic mountains looming over sandy beaches along with pretty medieval villages and a stunning national park.
Tara Canyon (the deepest gorge in Europe) and the mountain town of Pluzine are unmissable highlights here.

Check out these amazingly inspiring places that I have shared over the years. They are all lovely destinations that I have traveled to over the years, or my trusty writers have visited and shared here with us. We have travel tips for everything from Things to do in Curacao During a Cruise to a review of the El San Juan Resort and Casino in Puerto Rico!
I think you will love them all! Of course, this is just a small selection of our travels, but we have LOTS and lots of places that we have visited on the blog that are perfect for any type of trip you'd like to take.
Colmar, France
France has many highlights and is somewhere easy to reach from the UK. The town of Colmar is one that is often overlooked as a small town near the border of Germany and this is evident with the blend of cultures found here.
Colmar has German-style half-timbered buildings, cobbled streets and beautiful architecture along with local vineyards nearby.
This makes it a great place for a relaxing holiday with a lot to see and do in the area.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Lake Bled offers some of the most postcard-esque natural beauty in all of Europe and it is a great place for nature lovers. It is located in the stunning Upper Carniolan region in northwest Slovenia and 55km from the capital of Ljubljana, which is a charming city that is largely pedestrianized and has many green spaces.
Explore the enchanting allure of the lake that beckons wanderers from both near and far. This beguiling body of water owes its unique shape to the passage of time, and not mere coincidence. Carved by the Bohinj glacier, the tectonic hole once occupied the spot where the current lake lies. A colossal rock obstructed its path, persistently gouged until only the present island remained.
As the ice melted, the basin filled with water, giving birth to Lake Bled. With depths in excess of 30 meters and a marvelous array of aquatic life, including 19 species of fish like carp, sheatfish and lake trout, this lake is a diver's delight. On its surface, graceful swans and ducks paddle serenely amidst a diverse array of plants, all harmoniously coexisting to create a picture-perfect vista.
Leon, Spain
There are many destinations in Spain worth considering and it is a country that will always appeal to those seeking good weather, food and culture. Leon is a good alternative to the major cities with many architectural highlights, including the gothic 13th-century Catedral de Leon.
Drawing more pilgrims than tourists as a stop on northern Spain’s sacred Camino de Santiago, Leon is best known for its ancient history and magnificent Gothic cathedral. Convents and museums add to the architectural appeal, while tapas bars and clubs create a modern mix of nightlife.
There are many incredible destinations throughout Europe to choose from and this can make it hard to decide. The above are 5 highlights that should be on your shortlist for a trip in 2023 and all places that have a huge amount to offer and different from the most popular tourist destinations.
