Buying someone a gift they’ll love and cherish forever is hard! So many gifts can be bought and given in good faith, but they can end up in the trash as soon as your back is turned.
And to be honest, if someone got you a bad gift, you’d do the same! As such, there’s a lot of pressure involved in gift giving and being the person who always knows what to get someone.
What Are The Hallmarks Of A Great Gift?
But that’s why we’re here. Giving gifts is naturally a lovely thing, and we do it to put a smile on someone’s face. And to make sure you’re always passing along the perfect item, here are the points you need to keep in mind whenever you shop for a loved one’s birthday, holiday, or anniversary.
It Needs to Show You Listen
When we receive a gift we’ve mentioned at some point, or when a gift is related to something we do, it shows we’re cared for. As such, anything you buy as a gift shouldn’t come out of nowhere.
It should be something the person receiving the gift has mentioned before, or is part of a hobby, activity, or like they have. So above all else, don’t just buy them something you think they’ll like and will be able to use - that only leads to disappointment!
After all, you don’t know your loved one’s wants or needs better than they do. Don’t try to prove something here; just buy them something they like or love and make things easy for yourself.
It’ll still be a surprise for them, as they won’t know what you’ve got them off of the wishlist they put together! But even if they directly ask for something, the need to surprise them isn’t more important than spending your money on something they’ll be able to value.
It Should Fulfill a Want or Need
Even when you buy someone something they’ll love, according to the conditions above, it needs to fulfill a certain want or need they already have.
Do they need a new tool for their hobby? Is there a new book out by their favorite author, or relating to a hobby they have?
These kinds of presents are practical and will be used time and time again. As gifts, you can be sure your money will go to good use in buying them, and your loved one will thank you for saving them time and effort!
It Should Be Special in Some Way
Whatever you buy for your loved one, it needs to have some kind of significance to it. A ‘special’ gift can be anything, but as long as it’s from a place they love to shop, or it’s hard to get hold of, etc., it’ll be truly special.
No matter what the person in question likes, or has hinted they wanted, there needs to be this kind of extraordinary element to it.
This part of gift giving comes into play most often when you don’t know what to get someone.
For example, you can comb through any number of jewlery stores for a lovely necklace or bracelet that’ll suit your sister or your best friend, but you’ll only hit the jackpot if you buy them something that references an ‘in joke’ between the two of you, or is similar to something they had when they were younger.
It Should Be Wrapped Well
The final thing to not forget about: the way you wrap your gift matters a lot! The way it looks in someone’s hands sells a lot of the magic; it’s why gift bows, sparkles, and tags are so common.
There needs to be an element of suspense that’s dressed up just right, and wrapping a gift is the easiest thing to get right here!
Take advantage of that. Get a gift box, wrap it up with ribbon and stick on bows, and get the recipient excited just at the sight of it. And if you’re someone who struggles to wrap something that’s weirdly shaped in any way, there are plenty of tutorials out there that can help you.
So once you’ve secured a killer present, wrap it right and distill into it some of that traditional wonder that’ll make everyone want to rip the paper open!
Giving gifts should be fun! But if you’re always lamenting the gift giving times of the year, make sure you keep the tips above in mind. After all, a good gift always has these things in common!
