This Red White and Blue Whoopie Pies Recipe is always delicious and so fun! They are party-ready with patriotic colors and taste like grown-up Oreos.

    What Are Whoopie Pies?

Traditionally, whoopie pies are made by using two small (hand size) chocolate cakes and adding vanilla filling to the middle.

There are a ton of different ways to vary a classic whoopie pie recipe.

Today, I'm showing you how to make whoopie pies that are perfect for any patriotic event or party.

Why You'll Love Patriotic Whoopie Pies

Whether you are just looking for a fun and colorful Whoopie Pies Recipe, or are looking for a Patriotic recipe for Memorial Day, 4th of July or Labor Day, this recipe is sure to please your family and guests!

They taste just like classic whoopie pies - I just used white cake and dyed the batter instead of using chocolate cake mix.

If you want to make them with chocolate cake mix, I'll share that variation with you too.

Make them with the white cake mix.

Everyone will love how they look! Serve these red, white, and blue whoopie pies with some patriotic cockatiels! My two favorites are Red, White & Blue Sangria and a Red White and Blue Chocolate Martini.

Red White Blue Whoopie Pies Steps With Pictures

If it helps you to look at pictures of a recipe, then here are some photos of each step of the process.

Start by preheating the oven to 350 and then line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

Add cake mix, flour, water, oil and eggs to a mixing bowl and mix well until evenly combined.

dry ingredients and eggs in a bowl

Divide batter in half and color one red and one blue.

Adding red food coloring to the cake batter

Use a 2-tablespoon portion scoop to scoop the batter onto prepared baking sheets, keeping about 3" apart. Use the back of the scoop to flatten the pies to about ½" thick and about 2-½" around.

Blue cake mix cookie batter on a baking sheet

Bake for 12 minutes. Remove from oven and let stand on the baking sheet to cool for a few minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Once cooled, place a large dollop of frosting onto the flat side of the blue round pie.

    Adding frosting to whoopie pies

Add a red pie on top, and keep the flat sides together. Sprinkle red, white, and blue sprinkles on the frosting.

Repeat until all whoopie pies are assembled and decorated.

    How To Store Whoopie Pies

Serve immediately, or store any leftover whoopie pies covered and in the refrigerator. These whoopie pies will last about three or four days in the refrigerator. The frosting will become more solid the longer you keep it in the refrigerator, so it's better to eat them as soon as possible.

This Red White and Blue Whoopie Pies Recipe makes 12!

How to prevent the cookies from tasting like food coloring

When coloring food, it is important to make sure you don't taste the FOOD COLORING. Some of the food dyes and gels have a very strong chemical taste, and who wants to taste Red Dye #3?

So I used Wilton No Taste Red and Royal Blue Color Gels, and the Sprinkles are Betty Crocker Brand for this tasty recipe.
