Quick Tips for Making the Move to New Zealand

New Zealand is a beautiful country, and it’s quickly becoming a popular place to move. If you are one of the lucky ones who are packing up and heading over, congratulations! Your new home is stunning and exciting.

Still, moving to a new country is not a simple task. From getting your belongings to your new home to finding the best way to send money to NZ, you have many tasks ahead of you. Just remember that it will all be worth it in the end!

While this is by no means an exhaustive guide to moving to NZ, and your situation will vary case by case, here are a few tips to consider as you begin your new journey!

Quick Tips for Making the Move to New Zealand

Set Up Your NZ Bank Account

Many banks have “sister” banks internationally, so it could be worth asking your current financial institution if they have a recommended bank. Otherwise, make sure you do your research!

The good news is that most major New Zealand banks will allow you to open an account online. All you must do is spend a little time researching the one that works best for you. Find one with a branch near home, good reviews, etc. It will save you a lot of hassle later down the line if you sort this early too.

    Immerse Yourself in the Culture

This is going to be much easier after moving, but the culture of this island country is rich and storied. Learn the local lingo, and talk to locals about the area you live in. Kiwi culture is often called a mix of English and Maori culture and traditions. Take time to learn about the Maori people and attend local events. NZ and its people are amazing – it’s worth it to commit to becoming one with the island!

    Secure a Job

If you aren’t moving to the island because of a career opportunity, make sure you don’t forget about finding work. It’s understandably stressful trying to move and job hunt all at once, but you will want that income as soon as you are settled in. Use NZ job hunting sites, like Seek and TradeMe, to begin your search. Island living is worth it, but it does come at a price, so be ready however you can!

    Get Your Documents in Order

Have everything you need ready for the officials when you arrive, and even when you’re departing. Things like passports, IDs, and visas are incredibly important. Most of the time, you cannot simply gain residency in New Zealand.

You’ll often have to start with certain types of work visas, which will ideally lead to residency status. Be sure to research those opportunities, and what skills and jobs might make you stand out and have a better chance.

    Be Excited!

Moving anywhere is stressful. Moving to a new country is an entirely different beast. Remember this: at the end of the journey, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. That light is the beautiful country you will soon reside in, and your newest phase of life begins! NZ has so much to offer, from friendly locals to breathtaking countryside views and coastal parks. Take advantage of it all!

    Conclusion

As with moving to any new country, documentation is the most important thing, as well as having work lined up if you aren’t a retiree or ex-pat. Once you have the legal stuff out of the way, it’s packing and making final arrangements – and then your new start begins! NZ is an adventure all its own, and your new life will be thrilling. Take a deep breath, do what you have to do, and enjoy!
