First, the bad news: Covid is probably here to stay just like the flu. That means some form of the dreaded virus will always be with us. If not Covid, we would still have to deal with other deadly diseases that pop up from time to time. This is not to downplay the seriousness of the moment in which we find ourselves. But it is to underscore that this is but a moment among many. We have to eventually leave our cocoons of fear and venture out into the world to resume our lives.
This is the moment for your rebirth. If that is a bit too dramatic for your tastes, how about a simple makeover: one that takes the new reality into account? Yes, some things are going to be a little different than they were before. It will take several years for the new normal to stop being a huge headache. Even so, we have to get on with the business of getting on with our lives.
The biggest part of that is retaking control of our lives. Right now, the world is a little different than it used to be. In another few years, it will be different than it is right now. In some ways, we have to be in a constant state of personal makeover. Here is the makeover for which this moment calls:
Health Makeover
Health makeovers are always on again off again commitments. Resolutions that commit to a healthier lifestyle happen at least once a year. One of the biggest challenges is that we tend to try to bite off too much in one go. Instead of committing to eating nothing with sugar in it, why not commit to healthier digestion. That is both obtainable and important.
You can start by taking vitamins for digestion. That will go a long way toward the goal of making you healthier overall. Much of the dyspepsia we suffer is from poor digestion. During times of stress we eat like there is no tomorrow. Of course, there is always a tomorrow and we have to deal with the consequences of those stress-eating sessions. The easy thing to say is to just stop stress-eating. The easy thing to do is reduce the consequences of stress-eating.
Rebooting your health is a journey of a thousand steps. You will not get it done all at once. If you try, you will most likely do more harm than good. Instead of taking one step forward and two steps back, try picking a small battle you can easily win. Taking control of your digestion is one such winnable battle.
Career Makeover
It is among all things possible that you used to work at one of the thousands of companies that no longer exist post-pandemic. That is a tough blow for anyone to absorb. But the unemployment benefits are going to run out eventually. And if you are being perfectly honest, they weren’t that good to start with.
You can begin the rebuilding process by picking up one of the many side hustles that bring in a little bit of money. That will help keep the lights on. While you are doing that, take the opportunity to take on a new professional license or certification. You can get into insurance or real estate with very little overhead. Changing careers is never trivial. But if all you had before was a job, now is the perfect time to upgrade to a career.
Wardrobe Makeover
We have all gotten a little too used to wearing sweatpants and t-shirts as if they were real clothes. Guess what? You can’t go to a job interview dressed like that. You are going to have to get some clothes that not only fit your body, but that fit the moment we are experiencing. That moment is a return to the business of getting things done. You will instantly feel like a new person when you start dressing like the kind of person you used to respect. Wearing sweatpants out and about is just another way of giving up. The time for giving up is over.
Makeovers are naturally recurring events in the course of a life. Mark this moment in your life with a health makeover, a career makeover, and a wardrobe makeover. A better you awaits.
