If you have ever dreamed of becoming a model, but see a person in the mirror as being far too ordinary, you’re in luck.
Yes, you are lucky because even ordinary people can become models. In fact, it may even be a benefit that you aren’t ravishing. There are many reasons why advertisers are looking for the girl or guy next door.
If you really have your heart set on being a model, then read on for some inspiration. In this guide, I will go over several ways you can get paid to be a model even if you don’t look like one.
1 - Become a commercial model
You may have noticed a trend lately of TV commercials featuring regular looking people. Advertisers are starting to understand that people can better relate to others that look more like them and not like girls or guys who just stepped off the catwalk.
Commercial modelling may take some effort to break into, but it is definitely a viable way to get in front of a camera and get paid.
You should have some professional photos done. Usually a few different headshots will be enough but you may also want to have some full length pictures as well.
Make sure that you have an instagram account with lots of followers to have something to show a potential agent. If you can show that you understand how to pose for good pictures that tell a story, then that goes a long way to help you get hired.
2 - Become an extra
Movie studios don’t just film in Hollywood. Chances are that you live near an area where movies are being made. If you live in or near a big city like Chicago or New York, then your chances are increased. But, even if you live in a rural area, you could still land a gig as an extra when a movie does come to town.
Have a headshot ready. In fact lots of them.
Next, find a casting agency near you. A quick Google search is all you need and you are very likely to be surprised with how many results there are near you. Then follow the instructions each casting agency asks of you.
3 - Do modeling for artists
This is probably the easiest way to be a model, and get paid, but it isn’t for everybody. Many art schools have trouble finding models for their drawing and sculpture students. There is a pretty big demand for them and you will get paid for it.
It doesn’t matter at all what you look like or how in shape you are. If you are willing to stand in various poses in front of people drawing you, then you can be a figure model. Often you’ll be asked to be a nude life model but it is by no means required.
Will it be your big break into the modeling industry? Probably not. But it does pay and you can make a steady income from it.
