This Mother's Day weekend, Melissa McCarthy is the Life of the Party. I've been a Melissa McCarthy fan for a long time - I mean, really, who isn't? She is hilarious! - and back in 2016, I had the good fortune to visit the set of her Life of the Party movie, and that amazing experience culminated into me walking the red carpet of the Life of the Party movie premiere in Auburn, Alabama, last week.
About Life of the Party Movie
Melissa McCarthy stars as an old school mom who creates a whole new life in LIFE OF THE PARTY - a hilarious comedy no mom should miss - in theaters just in time for Mother's Day!
When her husband suddenly dumps her, longtime dedicated housewife Deanna (McCarthy) turns regret into re-set by going back to college...landing in the same class and school as her daughter, who's not entirely sold on the idea. Plunging headlong into the campus experience, the increasingly outspoken Deanna-now Dee Rock-embraces freedom, fun and frat boys on her own terms, finding her true self in a senior year no one ever expected.
Life of the Party is rated PG-13.
My Thoughts on Life of the Party Movie
Okay, so I think everyone knows by now that I went through a divorce myself pretty recently, and I have an adult daughter...while the circumstances of our divorces are a bit different, the similarities were so great that this movie had a personal effect on me. I always struggle to write movie reviews, because I don't know what would be considered a spoiler and I HATE spoiling things for movie goers!
What did I love about LIFE OF THE PARTY? To be honest, my favorite thing was that Deanna was knocked down on the ground and GOT RIGHT BACK UP. She went to college to finish her degree as a middle-aged woman!
That takes moxie, folks! She realized that there is life after divorce and focused on bettering herself...and her relationship with her daughter was so important that it became an equally importance focus of the film! Throughout the movie, you watch Deanna not only come into her own as a single woman...when you find out about the romantic part of the movie, you'll know why I laughed so hard and felt Deanna was a kindred spirit of mine in my single life - believe me, it's hilarious and very empowering for women of a certain age!
In Life of the Party, Deanna also bonds with her daughter - and her daughter's friends in a way that you wouldn't expect. She becomes one of the girls, albeit a much older version of the girls! I think this movie showed me that not only is their life after divorce, and you can be so much more than a wife...but that motherhood is really the number one aspect of our lives as married women with children. Yes, the parenting never ends, BUT sometimes, our children - especially our daughters, can help us grow and learn and come into our own. It was an usual story line, and one I think is more realistic than we would think. I know that in my own divorce, my daughter was there for me too!
Life of the Party Movie had it all, it will make you laugh SO HARD, but also have those AWE moments...it's the PERFECT movie for girlfriends to go see together, moms to see with their daughters - even a bunch of sisters to see together! I loved this movie and I think you will too!
Life of the Party opens in theaters nationwide MAY 11, meaning it's the perfect movie to see on Mother's Day weekend! Have fun!
