Getting Your Strong Willed Toddler To Do What You Want

Published: Dec 23, 2021 · Modified: Dec 23, 2021 by Jennifer · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Stubborn children are more likely to succeed as adults, according to a study reported by Inc. While that’s great news for the future, parenting a stubborn toddler can be difficult and stressful. This is why 21% say that toddlers are the trickiest age to parent. But fear not, as these tips will help you get through the toughest of times with your toddler.
Getting Your Strong Willed Toddler To Do What You Want

Getting Your Strong Willed Toddler To Do What You Want

    Eat their meals

Up to 35% of parents describe their toddlers as fussy eaters. Mealtimes with a stubborn toddler can be especially difficult when they refuse to eat their vegetables and throw food on the floor. You can make sure your toddler eats a healthy diet by keeping mealtimes happy. Chat and laugh with each other and avoid stressing out. Many toddlers refuse food that’s served directly to them, but they’ll happily eat it when it’s off mommy or daddy’s plate. Use this to your advantage by letting your toddler ‘steal’ your food when you’re not looking. Don’t make a fuss when they refuse food or throw it away. Simply, pick up the food and carry on as normal. Your toddler will soon get bored and eventually give in.

    Sleep in their own bed

Are you stuck co-sleeping with your toddler because they refuse to sleep in their own bed? If the answer is yes, you need to make your child move into your own bed as soon as possible. One study found that moms who co-slept with their toddlers lost almost an hour of sleep per night. They also reported more mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. Most stubborn children won’t sleep in a cot as they’ll just try to climb out. Thankfully, the majority of them can move into a bed around two years of age. To help your child sleep in their big bed, make it as inviting as possible with soft toys and colorful bedding. A toddler alarm clock which shows them when it’s time to get up is also a good way to encourage them to stay put in their own room.

    Getting dressed

Science says it’s perfectly normal for toddlers to refuse to get dressed. But, when you’re in a rush to get out of the door, it can be one of the most frustrating things to deal with. You can entice your defiant toddler to get dressed in the morning by offering them a choice between two outfits. You’ll find that your toddler doesn’t respond well to being hurried along, so make sure you give yourself and your child plenty of time in the morning to get ready. Toddlers like to do things for themselves, so encouraging them to get dressed themselves is a good way to ensure they get dressed. And if all else fails, it’s not the end of the world, if your toddler leaves the house in his or her pajamas or favorite dressing-up outfit.

Parenting a toddler is an experience you’ll never forget. By following this advice, you’ll make it an easier and happier time for both of you.
