    Beyond Smoking: Healthier Ways to Use Medical Marijuana

    The medicinal use of cannabis is becoming increasingly popularin states all across the United States. As more studies and research continues to review the benefits of this kind of treatment, governments far and wide are beginning to relax their laws for legalization. However, most people assume that receiving a prescription for this plant means that they need to learn how to smoke to ingest their medicine. However, the truth is that although this is a common option for a lot of people, it’s not the only choice. In fact, smoking can lead to coughing, discomfort, and other side effects that many patients would rather avoid. So, is there a healthier way?

    Easier Options: Vaping and Edibles

    Medical marijuana is easy to obtain in states where the use of this treatment is legalized. Once you’ve received a prescription and card from a doctor in Oklahoma, or a similar state, then you’ll be able to go online and find local depositories in your area. Those locations, and even your doctors, might be able to give you some advice on how to take your treatment if you’re not a fan of smoking.

    One popular option is to bake medical cannabis into oils, butters, and tinctures. Many locations are beginning to experiment with creating pre-made cookies, teas, and brownies that could be ideal for patients who would prefer to stay away from smokables. However, these methods can be problematic in their own way. When consumed in a food or drink, edible cannabinoids like THC can’t enter the bloodstream as quickly. This can make it difficult to determine exactly how much you need to use.

    Additionally, people who suffer from nausea and sickness as a result of their condition might not want to eat their treatment. Alternatively, a vaporizer might seem like a slightly more appealing option compared to smoking. With vaporizers, you can heat your herbs to a high enough temperature that the internal chemicals vaporize, allowing you to breathe in the benefits, without the smoke. However, just like smoking, continued exposure to vapor could also cause lung injuries down the road.

    Finding the Right Strategy for You

    Ultimately, there’s no one-size-fits-all right way to take your treatment when you’re given medical cannabis. Your doctor may be able to give you some suggestions, but most patients find that they need to experiment with different strategies for a while until they find something that suits them. As with most things, there are pros and cons to every method.

    While edibles are typically healthier than smoking, they might not have the right impact on you as immediately as inhaling the endocannabinoids that you need. On the other hand, vaporizers and smoking can give you more immediate results, but may lead to additional health problems that need to be managed by your doctor. Make sure that you discuss your options with your doctor in depth before making your decision. Some patients even see results using things like tinctures or topical lotions. Your doctor may be able to offer some suggestions that you haven’t considered yourself.
