Exploring The Temple of Poseidon in Greece Through Tripadvisor

I received a complimentary tour credit in exchange for this post. All opinions are my own.

While I did have a travel bucket list, I don't actually travel to mark things off a checklist. I travel to experience things that matter, with the people who matter. Sometimes that's a weekend away with my girlfriends, a holiday in Germany with the greatest friends, or a vacation with my 19-year-old daughter Angeline. It was during my first trip to Greece that I realized Aphrodite was my Greek goddess...the trip impacted me so much that I went back to the States and got a tattoo of her on my arm.

Why I Got a Tattoo of Aphrodite

So it made sense that when I took Angeline to Greece for her first time in May, we visited the temple of her favorite Greek god, Poseidon. It was about an hour away from where we were staying in Athens, and I didn't rent a car, so I booked a tour through TripAdvisor to take us there!

For years I've been using Viator on my travels to book guided tours and day trips. They were recently incorporated into TripAdvisor, so I KNEW that the tour would be awesome. They're the world’s largest provider of tours, activities, and attractions, with more than 56,000 bookable experiences in 2,500 destinations worldwide.

I can be a pretty adventurous, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants traveler, but when it comes to tours and attractions I prefer to book in advance. If I'm going to experience something, I want to have the best experience possible. Booking in advance lets me compare tours, check out the reviews and see the "big picture" over view. I'm also able to make sure we actually get a tour before it's sold out - which has actually happened to me when trying to book a popular tour in Ireland!

Booking the tour was super easy, as we already knew where we wanted to go. It was simply a matter of checking out the reviews for each tour on TripAdvisor and going with the one we liked best. I was able to book the tour right from the TripAdvisor app on my phone from our hotel room the day we arrived. You really can't get much more convenient than that.

    Temple 1

We arrived at Cape Sounion on a cloudy, overcast day. Just 70 km south of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon stands on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the sea. I couldn't think of a more fitting place for a god of both land and sea. The temple was built in 444 BC and consist of impressive white marble columns. There are also a few remains of a propylaeum and a fortified tower.

The views are breathtaking - and absolutely perfect for taking photos! Even on a cloudy day, Angeline and I got some amazing photos.

    Temple 2

Angeline was SO EXCITED to see the temple, which was in remarkably good condition, all things considered! It was a dream come through for her, and it was effortless on my part, thanks to the Temple of Poseidon tour through TripAdvisor.

    temple 5

There is also a cafe at the site, serving snacks and delicious iced coffees, and they have bathrooms and free wifi as well.

    temple 3

Once we were back in Athens, we used TripAdvisor to find a nice restaurant near our hotels that served delicious Gyro's. It was just down the street from our hotel! Angeline had never had a gyro before, and she became immediately obsessed with them!

    temple7

We had an amazing time during our tour, and TripAdvisor made is SO EASY!

TripAdvisor also offers some other great perks for travelers:

    • VIP access: We offer skip-the-line opportunities, behind-the-scenes access, private viewings and more
    • 24/7 customer service: Book with TripAdvisor Attractions and you’ll have 24/7 access to our customer support team
    • Low price guarantee: If you find a lower price for the same tour or activity within 72 hours of booking, or if you arrive in your destination and find your activity offered at a lower price by our operator, let us know. We’ll refund the price difference

If you haven't used TripAdvisor to book a tour yet, I highly recommend it! You can find out more on TripAdvisor.com/Attractions!

You can also download the TripAdvisor app for iPhone hereand for Android devices here.

That is so awesome! I love all the historical sites of Greece. I've always loved Greek mythology, and I would LOVE to visit the temple along with the other sites one day.

We have been using trip advisor more and more for recent trips. Have found some great off the beaten path things to do. Most recent a tour in Belfast, we learned so much about the area.

I would! I've been using Viator - now owned by TripAdvisor - for about 5 years for tours and I have NEVER been disappointed!
