    Manchester city centre activities

Published: Apr 28, 2024 by Jennifer · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Dementia is a condition that’s affecting more and more of our elderly loved ones, and doing the things they love can often be a little more difficult as a result of that. It can make experiences and situations overwhelming, as well as often confusing too.

Five great Manchester city centre activities for people with dementia

However, while we may need help with elderly dementia care of our loved ones, it also shouldn’t mean we don’t look to experience the things they loved, just a little more tailored to their needs.

Across Manchester there are a number of city centre activities that are dementia friendly, and they can help create magical days out that can benefit both us and our loved ones significantly.

So, if you want to trial taking your loved one out or are looking for something to do with them in Manchester, here are five great options…

    Manchester Art Gallery

The Art Gallery is one of the best options for a dementia friendly experience. The space provides a welcoming and accessible environment that includes a number of dementia friendly tours as well as workshops.

The workshops are designed specifically to stimulate creativity and encourage communication and collaboration, all led by staff who are trained to provide support and guidance.

It can be a great way to spark meaningful interactions and immerse themselves in art, something of which they may have a keen interest in.

    Castlefield Viaduct

Getting out in the open can also be a good option and the tranquility of Castlefield Viaduct, the new National Trust sky garden is perfect for this.

It’s free to visit, while you can also enjoy a free guided tour during mornings, although you do need to book this. It’s level with clear walkways and is a great way to view the city your loved one has perhaps grown up in, but from a completely new perspective.

    Manchester Museum

One of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, the Manchester Museum has enjoyed renovations in recent years and provides some really engaging experiences for people living with dementia.

There are guided tours, interactive displays and many workshops for people living with the condition, while there are also many sensory experiences that can really stimulate curiosity. If you haven’t taken your loved one to the museum yet, check online for upcoming dementia friendly tours and book yourself on.

    Bridgewater Hall Concerts

The Bridgewater Hall is the iconic home of the Halle Orchestra and each season there are a number of dementia friendly and more relaxed events for those with dementia and other mental health conditions.

In fact, it can be an incredibly soothing afternoon, with the music really helping evoke calm and relaxation, as well as enjoying what is a brilliant shared experience.

    Manchester Central Library

Last but not least, and of course there are many more great experiences outside of this top five, but the Central Library offers a range of dementia friendly activities and events across the year, from tours put on by the library to other charities and community groups putting on their own events.

Reading groups are one of the most popular experiences at the library, while the peaceful reading areas are conducive to an afternoon out, regardless of any specific dementia friendly events.
