Fall Cleaning Is A Thing, Here's What You Should Do To Get Your Home Ready For Winter

Ever heard of fall cleaning? It's just like spring cleaning but geared towards getting your home ready for the winter. Think about it, summer is the time for vacations and spending the days outdoors. For many of us, that means less time cleaning the house and more time enjoying the summer vacation. But what happens to the dirt and grime in our home? It accumulates and multiplies in the house, giving way to allergies and disease that can harm everyone in the household--even our pets!

So let's be proactive and take a fall cleaning initiative. In the winter, it's going to be harder to clean the whole house as the frost sets in. Thus, it's best to give your home a nice and thorough cleaning this fall. Here are six fall cleaning steps to get your home ready for the winter:

    1. Get your cleaning arsenal ready

The first step to any cleaning endeavor is to prepare your cleaning supplies. Take inventory of your supply cabinet and determine which supplies are lacking. Make sure you are using everything correctly and avoid products that are harmful to your house and the environment. Hint: read the labels.

A good vacuum cleaner is also a recommended investment, especially if you have carpeted floors. In the summer, foot traffic is usually high and often comes from the outdoors. That means more dirt and dust getting in the house. Your regular vacuum may not be able to keep up with all the floor grime, but top-notch vacuum cleaners can. These vacuum cleaners can help clean your carpets easily and efficiently, especially if you want one that helps get rid of smell, too.

    2. Start with dusting and organizing

With all the dust that has accumulated in the warm summer months, it's best you tackle that first. Start with the ceiling fans, shelves, mantles, and all other surfaces. Use a microfiber cloth to prevent dust from circling around the air. If you want, you can buy a handheld vacuum cleaner to get rid of those dust bunnies more easily.

    3. Clean all the windows and window coverings

You probably won't have the chance to clean your windows once winter sets in. Fall is the best time to do it, so buy a good glass cleaner and wipe down all the window glass. Make sure to do it during a cloudy day so you can see if there are any streaks.

Are your window coverings a bit grimy, too? Pop washer-safe material, such as cotton, wool, and rayon, in the machine. For other types of material, send them to a professional to have them cleaned.

    4. Rotate your closets

There's no use in sifting through a closet full of clothes for all seasons! Before the cold weather comes, get your closets organized. Put away the swimwear for next year's summer party. Fold the summer outfits and store them in the drawers. It's time for your winter clothes to take their spot in your closet, with less clutter!

    5. Clean the chimney

Winter is coming, and that can mean one of many things: the fireplace is going to get used more often. You're probably already thinking of curling up in front of the fireplace with hot cocoa in hand, but before that, the chimney needs to be cleaned. If you don't, a dirty chimney can be a big fire hazard--not to mention the soot that can dirty up your home.

You can clean a chimney on your own, but you would need a lot of equipment for that. If you don't have the time or means to DIY, get a professional service to do it for you.
