Debunking 5 Myths About Laser Tattoo Removal

Published: Jul 4, 2025 by Jennifer · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

None of us ever imagine that we’ll get a tattoo removed as we sit for hours under the needle. But life can change, things that we thought looked cool no longer seem so, those close to us can leave, and preferences change.

Getting a tattoo removed is a decision you may come to for all manner of reasons, and while it is draining on your time and budget, the good news is that it can be done effectively. If you’re considering this option for yourself, make sure to read up on everything you should know about laser tattoo removal and don’t fall for any of the following myths.

    It Leaves a Scar

You may have read fearmongering posts online that claim laser tattoo removal leaves a scar. But actually, it has a very low risk of scarring when it’s performed by a qualified professional using the right type of laser and setting.

Make sure to choose a reputable laser tattoo removal specialist like Lone Star Tattoo Removal, and follow the aftercare instructions carefully (picking and scratching scabs increases your risk of scarring).

Only Certain Ink Colors Can Be Removed

You might have also heard that some tattoo ink colors can’t be removed by a laser. There’s some truth to this, but it doesn’t apply across the board.

Different laser tattoo removal specialists use different types of lasers, and each type targets specific colors better than others. So, if you have a tattoo with red, orange, or purple inks, you’re not stuck with your tattoo for life - it just means you’ll need to find a specialist with a laser that can remove them.

You’ll Be Done After A Single Session

If only laser tattoo removal were so quick and simple that you needed just a single session to fully erase the ink. Unfortunately, removing the tattoo takes much longer than putting it there in the first place, so don’t fall for the myth that laser tattoo removal is a one-and-done thing.

It’ll probably take eight to 12 sessions of lasering for your tattoo to fully fade, depending on your metabolism, skin tone, the color and thickness of your tattoo ink, and more. Make sure to manage your expectations before you spend your money.

It’s Only For People With Regrets

Laser tattoo removal is often considered to be something that you can only do if you need to remove something you regret getting in the first place (the ex’s name or the leprechaun tattoo you got on a drunken night out both spring to mind). But anyone can get their tattoo removed for whatever reason.

For instance, many people just get sick of their tattoos or decide they just want their skin to be ink-free again. It doesn’t mean you’re embarrassed or now suddenly hate tattoos outright.

It’s Too Painful To Be Worth It

Finally, some people will try to scare you into the idea that getting your tattoo removed with a laser is just too painful to be worth it. If this were true, you’d have to question why so many people return for session after session of laser removal today.

Yes, getting a tattoo removed can hurt, but the pain is manageable and short-lived. So, for most people, it’s not a reason to avoid tattoo removal altogether.
