How Much is a First Class Flight?

Published: Sep 16, 2019 · Modified: Oct 14, 2023 by Jennifer · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

When you think of luxury, you tend to think about something incredibly expensive with little meaning or purpose. At least, that is what I think. Flying first class is one of those luxury items that you really do not need, even if you can afford it. But who really can afford it? Primarily, the supremely wealthy.

How Much is a First Class Flight?

Think about this, don’t you go to the same location as someone in economy? Yes. Do you get there at the same time? Yes. Is it ridiculously cheaper to go to the same place? Yes. So why go on a first-class trip? There are actually a few attractive reasons to book your next flight in style.

    Average First Class Price

If you want to travel first class, you’ll be playing a ridiculous amount of money. That’s obvious enough, but how much will it actually cost you? If you’re taking a trip from the United States, the average prices are as follows:

    • Asia: $4,000
    • Africa: $6,000
    • Australia: $6,100
    • Europe: $3,500
    • Hawaii: $2,500
    • India: $5,500
    • South America: $3,700

We’re going to look at the numbers more closely in the next example.

Say you wanted to fly first class from London to Rome, the lowest price available at this moment is $12,461. That is even more expensive than the average price above, but this price also accounts for last-minute pricing.

Even economy flyers know that buying flights last minute will cost a premium. However, you could also consider looking into travel hacking with miles and points to make this cost reasonable. Check out Frugal Flyer to learn more.

    Is First Class Worth It?

Depending on who you ask, first class can be worth it for specific individuals. Different airlines will give you various perks.

For example, Virgin America will provide first-class travelers with a lie-flat seat for overnight stays. JetBlue, on the other hand, will give you expedited security and check-in, along with free Wi-Fi and priority checked-in baggage.

Below are common things to expect as a first-class traveler (although, these aren’t guaranteed for all airlines).

    • Premium airport lounges
    • Free alcoholic beverages
    • Free mani-pedis
    • Complimentary shower after landing
    • Premium shuttle boarding
    • Top-quality meals
    • Pajamas, eye masks, and gift bags
    • Broader seats, a larger TV
    • Flatbed with bedding
    • Sliding doors for privacy

Convenience is the True Perk to First Class

All the bells and whistles are nice, but the biggest attraction is how well-rested you’ll feel once you leave the flight. Jet lag isn’t something travelers can avoid, but a cozy nap on the airplane can alleviate some symptoms. You will also have fast check-in times, faster exit of the plane, and quick baggage claim. You’ll be out of there before anyone else.

If you find a first-class ticket for cheap, I wouldn’t pass up the experience.
