4 Tips for Transforming Your Bedroom into a Luxury Retreat

Published: Apr 22, 2017 · Modified: Mar 25, 2023 by Jennifer · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

The bedroom is a unique room in the home because it is not open to guests. The only people allowed in the bedroom are family members, and not all of them are truly welcome.

The point is, with the bedroom, the only person you have to please is yourself. It does not have to take any design cues from the rest of the house. It can be as weird as it wants to be. And there is no one to judge but you.

Because of this uniqueness, and the fact that the bedroom is the place where we spend the bulk of our time, there is no reason to hold back. You can and should personalize it any way you like.

If you want it to look like something on the starship Enterprise, that’s your call. But if you really want to do it up proper, here are a few suggestions to help you get things started:

    Bedding

It doesn’t matter if your bed is a pile of leaves. What makes the room is the bedding with which you cover it. Also, don’t sleep on a pile of leaves. Your bed visually dominates the room. By surface area, it is likely the largest piece of furniture you have. How you cover it is largely what defines the room. The smaller your bedroom, the more the bedding defines the room.

You can pick up a few ideas from a site like visionbedding.com for inspiration. With a little digging, you will find photorealistic comforters, throw pillows that look like kittens, and every color and pattern you can imagine. So if you want your bed to look like an aquarium full of exotic fish, go for it.

    Rugs

Have you ever thought it would be nice to have a nice, exotic rug to step on every morning. Well, it would be nice. And you should do just that. The right rug can make a room. It extends the bed. So you don’t want it to clash with the bed. You want it to expand the bed’s canvas.

If your bed looks like a coral reef, make the rug a sandy beach. Just remember that rugs are fragile. They are good for rooms that do not allow four-footed family members that track dirt, fleas, and pet hair. They also tend to scratch vigorously on rugs. If pets are a part of your bedroom life, forget the rugs. There are other ways to personalize the space that are pet-friendly

    Pet Furniture

Rather than making a room that is unfriendly to animals, why not make one that is as animal-friendly as a zoo? There are pet beds out there that are nicer than anything you happen to be sleeping on. You can easily spend over $1,000 on an orthopedic dog bed. In fact, for some ridiculously expensive pet items, a thousand isn’t even a good start.

But the point isn’t the price. The point is the value you place on spending time with your pet. Why put them under the bed when you can make their perch as important as yours. Let your bedroom showcase your love of your furry companion. But honestly, the $23,000 pet pavilion might be a little overboard.

    Mirrors

Do you know what happens when you put a couple of candles in a room full of mirrors? You get an incredible light show. Mirrors can do wonders for small bedrooms. They will make the bedroom feel bigger, brighter, and more expansive. So why not use up some of that wall space for big mirrors?

The great thing about mirrors is that they don’t all have to be the same size and shape, or have the same framing. You can place them everywhere. The real purpose of a mirror is to reflect light. So get rid of those silly night lights and hang a few mirrors. You’ll be glad you did.

Look, it doesn’t matter if the rest of the house is shabby-chic. It’s your bedroom, your sanctuary. No one is there to judge. So hang your ceiling full of stars and engage - in whatever makes you happy.
