Top Herbs To Grow at Home - Easy Home Garden
Here in sunny Florida, finding fresh fruits is always easy. After all, it's the sunshine state right? In my quest to find the new me after my divorce, I've started incorporating more fresh fruits and veggies into my diet. A few easy swaps in place of a bag of chips really isn't as hard as I imagined. I feel better about myself and my choices and know that's half the battle. So I started looking into what herbs to grow at home to use in cooking meals. Carry that eating fresh and feeling healthy over from snacking to actual cooking. Here's what I've found.
OREGANO
On my list of herbs to grow because, let's face it, we use it in so much stuff! Oregano requires six to eight hours of sunlight a day. If you're growing this indoors pick a well-lit window. Aim for one with southwestern sun exposure if you have it. Both the leaves and flowers are awesome edibles! It's also a great all natural insect repellent! Oregano is a great herb for any homemade sauce. Any Italian dish is going to call for oregano!
BASIL
You can sow this herb right in your sunny kitchen window! You then transplant it outside in early summer. I know most people prefer to buy it as a small established plant and take it from there as it can be a bit temperamental to start from seeds. But it's amazingly fragrant. And without Basil, there is no pesto. Which is why it's my #1 herbs to grow! I love making homemade pesto. It's also awesome in salads, on pizza with tomatoes and mozzarella. It's a nice warm, spicy flavor and is awesome in winter soups! Basil is often used as an all natural deodorizer. It's great for people low on iron and potassium.
CHIVES
These are the easiest herbs to grow at home. The require very little direct light. Chives are easiest to start from an already established plant. Just pull up a bunch from the plant (include the roots), drop it in a small pot half-full of potting soil and then cover the roots with more potting soil. Easy peasy. Chop these tiny onion tasting herbs up and toss on top of salads for a nice change. Top a mashed potato with some light sour cream and chives, and something I saw recently on Food Network was to use them to make an awesome compound butter and plop a dollop on a juicy grilled steak! Chives are used as an anti-inflammatory and can aide in digestion issues.
THYME
This is another on my list of super easy herbs to grow at home! It's super hardy and grows low to the ground. It looks pretty around edges in any home garden. It can last year round and if you can see it, you can eat it! Perfect, huh? I absolutely love, love, love this in eggs and cheese dishes. It's perfect with all proteins and we know every good Thanksgiving stuffing recipe is going to have Thyme!
MINT
Mint is another one of the easiest herbs to grow. Whether you start with seeds or an established plant, just pick a mostly sunny spot! If you're growing outside keep in mind it can also become invasive and completely take-over any garden. I would suggest growing mint in containers. The phrase 'grows like a weed' definitely applies! I use mint in everything from savory dishes to refreshing summer drinks, and of course hot teas. Another herb that helps keeps little buggers away too. When I'm not feeling well, mint is great for clearing up sinus congestion.
It's a great start for eating fresh and staying healthy while finding the new me don't you think? I get a great sense of accomplishment when I've been working with my hands too. I feel like my body follows my mind when I'm hoping to stay happy and healthy. A good positive attitude is for sure where it all starts. Sometimes, despite doing everything right we still need a little boost, especially for me with seasonal allergies. It's just that time of year. I was happy to have my Ricola® Revitalizing Herb Drops on hand last week when they hit just a tad harder than I can stand.
Since Chrüterchraft is the secret of the 10-herb blend, and is what differentiates Ricola® from other cough drops. And, always my go to brand. Since it would be incredibly difficult for me to make all 10 on my herbs to grow list, I'm thankful Ricola does it for me! Since they contain ginseng and a bit of B Vitamins in that lemony, effervescent center, they are great in restoring energy. And with all the traveling I do, I certainly need that some days!

I hope to have a window herb garden someday, right now the only window that would work our cat can reach and he would eat all of them. Had to smile when I saw Ricola. Our 11 year old wrote about it in school. A short story where she was the owner of Ricola and brought it to America. 🙂
