How I Spent a Week in Barbados

Did I ever tell you about the time that Chris and I were on our way to Barbados and he realized as the plane took off that he left his wallet in the car?

    Oh, I didn't?

Because that totally happened and it scared the living &*$@ out of me.

My husband was going for work, and I was accompanying him. Hotel, car, food, etc - it was all supposed to go on his company credit card.

You know, the one he left in his wallet in the car?

While I did have my debit and credit card on me, I was terrified that we would not be able to afford the charge for everything, especially the very expensive hotel, without maxing out our credit card.

When we arrived, he immediately called my mother and she totally came to our rescue. She went to our house, got the spare car keys, went to the airport, got his wallet out of the car, then ran to the post office and sent his wallet via international overnight mail.

We HOPED that it would arrive before I was scheduled to go back to Miami and he was supposed to go on his way to Trinidad...because who knows what would have happened if he ended up in Trinidad without a credit card or driver's license?

When we arrived in Barbados, I had to rent the car because I was the only one with a valid driver's license. Even though the rental agency had a copy of his driver's license on file, they wouldn't rent to him.

So I got to not only rent a car in a foreign country...but I had to drive on the left side of the road.

    It was terrifying.ย

FYI, I drove all the way from the airport to the hotel, which was about a 20 minute drive.

Then I let Chris drive for the rest of the week.

Yes, that was kind of illegal, but let's face it: I broke the law to save countless lives.

There was no way that I was going to manuever the streets of Barbados for a week without running over at least 12 people, and a few dogs. And probably a goat.

So what all did we do in Barbados?

I watched the surfers off of Needham Point.

I went to the George Washington House and learned about his short, yet life changing, stay on the island while he was still a land surveyor. One of these days soon, I will actually get around to writing about the museum!

We went to the Crane beach, which was covered in kelp...and ended up exploring the Sam Lord Castle ruins.

    That was quite the adventure!

Because my husband stays at the Hilton each month, he has risen through the levels in the Hilton HHonors Rewards program rather quickly. We received access to the Executive Lounge for free breakfast and tea time daily, so the only meals we paid out of pocket for were lunch and dinner.

On our first day, we stopped at a local grocery store and bought bottled water, soda, peanut butter and jelly and bread, so that I could make my own lunches and save money all week. For dinner, we went out to a different restaurant each night.

My favorite was a little place called Tapas, which was right on the beach. We got there before sundown and were able to enjoy watching the sun set on the water!

We also did a lot of driving around, exploring...and went to the movies on Friday night.

    I know, exciting stuff, people!

Of all of my travels this past summer, my week in Barbados was by far my favorite.

What did you do this summer?

Even with the forgotten wallet, that sounds like a great week. I did some traveling this summer too, but not anywhere as exotic or exciting!
