Over the past month, I have traveled all the way from Miami, Florida to Cancun, Mexico, from Freeport, Bahamas to Yosemite National Park in California, to Seattle, Washington to Boston, Massachusetts. No matter where I am going when I travel, one of the first things I pack in my carry on bag is a refillable water bottle. No matter where you go or what you're going to be doing, everyone needs a insulated beverage bottle to take along in their bag. I wanted to share my 5 Tips for Preparing for an Outdoors Adventure today because let's face it: not having the right things with you can make or break an adventure! I've had my Zojirushi insulated stainless steel bottle for a few weeks now and it has made my life on the road so much easier!
5 Tips for Preparing for an Outdoors Adventure
1. Prepare for the Weather.
Nothing ruins a hike through Yosemite National Park faster than wearing a tee shirt and shorts when it's 50 degrees at the top. Make sure that you research the weather forecast before setting out on any kind of outdoor activity. If the forecast predicts a high of 80 and a low of 40, understand that it is not going to be 80 degrees from sunup to sundown!
While in Seattle at the end of April, the weather predicted a high of 79, yet there we were, in down jackets and boots on a beach at 3 PM. Dress in layers so that you can easily throw on - or off - your jacket depending on the time of day.
2. Wear Sunscreen! {no matter how cloudy it is}
I feel like this should go without saying, but you would be surprised at how quickly you will get a sunburn even when it's cloudy out. I left Yosemite National park with very pink cheeks - not because it was incredibly sunny, but because I thought that with the overcast day, I wouldn't need sunscreen. Boy was I wrong! Between being outdoors with the UV rays filtering through the clouds and being so high up, I got a lot more sun that I anticipated.
3. Know Where You are Going and How to Get There.
The thing about exploring the great outdoors is that while each location may only be a few miles apart, you don't know what the traveling conditions will be like until you're well on your way. Let's say that you are camping on a campground and plan to drive into the next park to do some hiking. It may only be 5 miles away, but with the curves in the road or a low speed limit, it may take you much longer than you planned.
Don't forget to take things into account like mapping out your drive before departing, as you would be surprised how often you find yourself without cell phone reception - the map app on your smartphone won't do you any good if there's no signal!
If you suffer from motion sickness, bring along a motion sickness medication. I don't always get sick, but I ended up very ill the last night of my stay in California because our driver took about a million curves much too fast for my stomach's taste...it's best to prepare for those curvy roads!
4. Bring Fully-Charged Cameras and Cell Phones and Back Up Chargers!
When you stumble upon something so beautiful that you want to capture the image to take back home with you, a dead smartphone battery will do you no good. When out in the wilderness, your phone battery will die quickly, as it is continuously searching for a signal. You can put it on Airplane Mode to preserve battery life, but also bring along a back up charger so that you're always ready to catch a great shot, like this one!
5. Bring a Refillable Water Bottle.
Whether it's a hike through Yosemite National Park in California or a day spent on the beach in Freeport, Bahamas, you are going to get thirsty! Bringing along an refillable water bottle means that you can prepare for bringing either a cold or a hot beverage, and the Zojirushi insulated stainless steel bottle is perfect for both!
