101 Guide to Basic Home Protection

Published: Nov 19, 2021 · Modified: Nov 19, 2021 by Jennifer · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Finding adequate home protection doesn’t have to be a lengthy and complicated process. There are many things you can do that are both simple and cost-efficient. In this article, we’ll offer a quick guide to basic home protection so you can rest easily at night.

Do your research on the neighborhood

This home protection tip is essential for new homeowners and renters and should be one of the first things you do before signing on the dotted line. Before moving into a new place, you should conduct thorough research on the neighborhood. Look to see what the community is like, paying careful attention to any recent increase in criminal activity. If you notice a trending increase in crime, then this could be a good indicator that it might not be a place worth considering.

Current homeowners would also do well to be aware of what’s going on in their neighborhood. You can stay up to date by reading the newspaper, joining community groups, or simply speaking with your neighbors on a regular basis.

    Join neighborhood watch groups

Riding the coattails of the previous tip, it might be a good idea to join your neighborhood watch group to stay informed of suspicious activity in your community. If your area doesn’t already have a group then maybe you can start one. Speak with your neighbors and see who would be interested in joining. This can be an informal monthly meeting to discuss important news or it can take the form of an online group where members can post observations and warn each other of questionable activity happening around the neighborhood.

    Get sturdy door locks

Test the integrity of the locks on all of your doors and entry points. If any locking mechanisms look old or inadequate then perhaps it’s time to get something a bit sturdier. A good bet is to invest in deadbolts to keep unwanted intruders on the outside where they belong.

    Secure all windows

While you’re checking to make sure the locks on your doors are sufficient, take a quick inventory of the windows and note any locks that should also be replaced. Windows are an entry point too and should have proper locks installed.

    Don’t advertise your absence

Taking a much-needed vacation can be an exciting time. However, it’s not a good idea to advertise on social media when you plan on being away from home. The reason is that you can’t control who sees your post. An innocent post about an upcoming vacation could be the exact thing a dubious character is looking for to exploit a vulnerable situation. That said, save your announcements and photo sharing until after you’ve safely returned home.

Invest in a basic home security system

There are many options to take your home security game to the next level. You can invest in a professionally installed security system or choose a more modest do-it-yourself product that can be done in about an hour. You can find a home security alarm system that fits your budget and provides the protection you’re looking for. Whether it’s a video surveillance camera, motion sensors, or something that integrates into your home smart system, get the protection that fits your personal needs.
