5 easy, flavor-packed Thai recipes you can make at home

Are you craving the vibrant, bold flavors of Thailand? Once you’ve had a whiff of fresh lemongrass and tasted the fiery kick of chili dancing together with the sweetness of lime in perfect harmony, you simply cannot go back to your regular weekday or weekend meals.

While it would be best if you could travel to Thailand, get your tickets at SiamTickets to all your favorite destinations, and taste authentic Thai dishes, the alternative is to bring the flavor of Thailand into your kitchen.

    Tom Kha

Tom Kha, or Thai coconut soup, is a classic Thai soup recipe that can be made with any protein of your choice. The ingredients you need for 4 servings are:

    • 13-ounce can of coconut milk, full-fat
    • 1 bunch scallions, thinly sliced
    • 1 ½ inch piece peeled ginger, minced
    • 4 cups chicken stock
    • 2-3 tablespoon fish sauce
    • 1 tablespoon Thai red curry paste (easily available online or in supermarkets)
    • 1 tablespoon chili paste
    • 1 stalk lemongrass
    • 2 cups cooked chicken (or any meat of your choice)
    • Fresh cilantro and juice of 1 lime
    • Minced hot peppers

Put the chicken stock in a soup pot, along with the ginger, scallion, lemongrass, and sliced hot peppers. Simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes. Add the coconut milk, fish sauce, pastes, and chicken. Let the concoction simmer for five more minutes so that the flavors can meld. Finally, add the lime juice, salt to taste, and cilantro. Serve hot!

    Thai fried pork with garlic

This dish is extremely simple but so satisfying. This is all you need:

    • 500g pork
    • 100g garlic
    • 2 tablespoon light soy sauce
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • 2 tablespoon wheat flour
    • 1 bottle of Sriracha chili sauce
    • 2 tablespoon oyster sauce
    • 1 teaspoon coconut sugar

Prepare the marinade by mixing light soya sauce, black pepper, oyster sauce, and coconut sugar. Mix well to combine all the ingredients. Then, cut the pork into small cubes and place it in the marinade bowl. Keep it refrigerated for about twenty minutes.

In the meantime, you can pound the garlic. When the pork is marinated, mix the garlic and 2 tablespoon of wheat flour. Deep fry until golden brown.

    Som Tam

It is impossible to return from Thailand without eating Som Tam (Thai green papaya salad). Here’s what you need to recreate this simple dish:

    • 1 small green papaya
    • 1 medium garlic clove, minced
    • 1 small red chile pepper, finely chopped
    • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
    • 2 tablespoon fish sauce
    • 3 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
    • 2 tablespoon brown sugar
    • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
    • 5 large green beans
    • 2 cups bean sprouts
    • ¼ cup coarsely chopped Thai or Italian basil
    • ½ cup roasted peanuts
    • 3 medium scallions, thinly sliced

Peel and grate the green papaya into extremely thin slices. Also, slice the green beans. Add chile pepper, garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, and brown sugar in a food processor and process until it turns reddish.

Place the cherry tomatoes, shredded papaya, and bean sprouts in a bowl. Add most of the basil and the chile dressing. Mix them properly. Add the peanuts and toss again.

Adjust the taste of the salad as required.

Tom Yum soup with king prawns

Tom Yum is a Thai spicy and sour soup whose taste lingers long after the last drop is devoured. Here’s what you need:

    • 1 piece ginger, finely chopped
    • I piece galangal, finely chopped
    • 4 chili pepper, dried
    • 2 cloves garlic, halved
    • 30 ml sesame oil
    • 4 leaves kaffir lime
    • 1 stick lemongrass
    • Fish sauce
    • Kaffir lime juice
    • 12 king prawns, entrails removed and peeled
    • Thai basil (to garnish)

Fry the galangal and ginger (1 tablespoon set aside), the prawn shells, the garlic, and 2 chili peppers in hot oil for 2-3 minutes. Quench with 80 ml water. Add the lemongrass and lime leaves and simmer for about 20 minutes.

Sieve and season with lime juice and fish sauce. Add the prawns, the remaining chili peppers and ginger, and cook on a low heat for around 3 minutes. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve hot.

    Pad Thai

This is a classic! Here’s what you need:

    • Protein (crispy Tofu or thinly sliced shrimp, chicken, or any meat of your choice)
    • Eggs
    • Garlic cloves and shallots
    • Fresh lime juice
    • Fish sauce
    • Brown sugar
    • Crushed peanuts
    • Soy sauce
