Family values are important. I don’t mean political debates or religious beliefs. I mean the family values that keep our family’s running. They’re different for all of us, but one thing’s the same for every family and its values. They’re always based in love. And those values are always clear to us and our loved ones in our family mottos – whether said or unsaid. I’m going to let you in on my family’s values and motto. Later on, I’d love to hear all about yours.
My Family Values
My family has always been one of action. Not so much forethought. We have the blood of adventurers flowing through us, and we rarely stop to think about consequences before jumping into something. We are ruled by passion, adventure, and our hearts. It’s actually an AWESOME way to live if you can handle the occasional fallout.
In fact, if we had a physical family crest, it would read: Be Yourself or don’t be anything! Collect moments, not things…and NEVER stop exploring!
And we live by those unspoken words. Our family values are love, life, family, making the most of every moment, and being a positive impact on this earth while we’re here. It’s served all of us well – for the most part – and I don’t ever see that changing.
Bates Family Values
Speaking of being yourself, have you seen the original docu-series, Bringing Up Bates, on the UP network? It’s a show all about Gil and Kelly Jo Bates: they have 19 children. Yes, that’s right…they have 19 children! Their family is growing because their kids are now having babies. Talk about a packed house during the holidays! I love this show! Of course, you’re initially drawn in because of the sheer number of kids that they have, but after that, it’s a show that really speaks to family and family values. The Bates must know that being on television opens them up to all sorts of scrutiny and judging by people about their large family, but they still do their thing. That’s because family values are individual to each family. No one else should control them.
The thing I love the most about Bringing Up Bates is how down to earth they are, and how they stick to their guns. I mean, just take a look at some of the quotes from the show. I swear, someone in my family has said one of these at one point or another.
- “If you don’t have big dreams, you’ll never go anywhere in life.” – Tori
- “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” – Gil
- “Duct tape is always important.” – Nathan
- “What’s an average family? An average family for me growing up was a new kid every year.” – Zach
