Wanderlust Wednesday: Driving to the Florida Keys

The nearest Walmart to me is about 15 miles away in Florida City. For those not familiar with Miami, Florida City is all the way down south – it’s the last neighborhood in Miami before you start driving to the Florida Keys.

Le’ts put it this way: we always gas up in Florida City before we drive to Key West.

Each time I go shopping at the Walmart Super Center, I see the signs to get off the Florida Turnpike at the exit for Walmart in Florida City, or to get off on the last exit, where the Turnpike ends on US1 and begins the route to Key West.

Every single time I make that trip to Walmart, I feel invisible forces steering my car left towards the exit to US1…it’s like my car is telling me that I should be driving to the Florida Keys or something!

It doesn’t help matters any that the last time I was in Key West, I went with my husband and his parents and we only spent one night. That was almost a year ago, so we are definitely due for another trip!

My girlfriends and I used to take a trip down there with our significant others a few times a year and I miss that so much! Our last group trip to the Keys was in late 2010, so it has been over two years. That is way too long!

If you live in Florida, have you ever thought about driving to the Florida Keys on the spur of the moment?

If you do, I highly recommend stopping by Robbie’s Tarpon Feeding on mile marker 88 – for about $2.50, you can take a walk on their pier and feed the biggest tarpon you’ve ever seen!

Just watch your fingers, because they do bite!

Can you see why I’ve been dying to take that left and start driving to the Florida Keys ? As much as I love Walmart, it’s just not a tropical paradise…

Key West is one of our favorite cities! We always visit the Cracker Barrel near Walmart on our way to Key West.

Very pretty! Oh how I miss Florida. I do not get to visit much anymore now that we live in California. 🙁

Dang. I was just thinking about the fact that we’re getting a heat wave here in MA this week. It’s going to be a high of 47 degrees today…..I am uber jealous of you right now.
