As you all may know, I am a supporter of Macy's Heart of Haiti products. I've written previously about this line of products and think that Valentine's Day is a great opportunity to talk about responsible consumerism. Valentine's Day may often be touted as a manufactured holiday to sell more candy and cards, but celebrating it doesn't have to be an act of materialism and consumption. You can purchase gifts that give back!
Fair trade products like Macy's Heart of Haiti feature beautiful handmade home decor pieces and jewelry with half of the wholesale price going directly back to the artisans that make them. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere and after the tragic earthquake that took the lives of over 200,000 Haitians and destroyed the homes of countless more, Macy's is doing their part to create sustainable jobs for talented Haitian artisans. You can do your part by encouraging economic growth in developing countries being conscious of the items you buy and where they come.
This Valentine's Day, I'm choosing to celebrate by showing my support for this cause. If you choose to do the same, you can visit their site at www.macys.com/haiti.
