I love smartphones - I basically run my blogging business from mine because I am always on the go. Between traveling a few times a month and running around like a chicken with my head cut off when I am at home, a great smartphone with a user-friendly interface and quality camera is absolutely essential! Whenever there is a new smartphone on the market, I get all excited and spend late nights reading up on the specs and projections. Will this be THE PHONE for me? Will it solve all of my problems and allow me to run my business remotely, regardless of where I am? The answer is usually "no" but I haven't given up hope yet! The brand new LG G4 just might be THE ONE, guys. It just might be...and here's why!
The Android operating system is pretty amazing. I have just a bit of experience using an Android phone from a previous review. I actually really liked the operating system, but the phone was too large for me to be able to use it while multi-tasking. I am almost always multi-tasking, so an over-sized phone just doesn't work for me -I already have a laptop and a tablet, thank you very much. Android is taking some getting used to, but I really like that it's user-friendly and that the Google Play store offers SO MANY awesome apps! Coming from iOS, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find some of my favorite apps, but they're all right there in the Google Play store. As a blogger, I use a ton of Google products: Gmail, Google Drive, G+ - and I am absolutely in love with how well the LG G4 syncs my Google accounts!
One of the things that is most important to me when it comes to an operating system is that the apps flow seamlessly. If I am in Facebook and need to open a link to Pinterest or Twitter, I want to be able to do so INSIDE Facebook. I don't want to leave the app to open another app, then have to close that app and scroll back to Facebook and reopen it. The Android operating system on the LG G4 does exactly this, which saves me so much time when I am working on social media from my phone - which is where I do 99% of my social media!
The LG G4 just looks so damn cool. My very first cell phone back in the 90s was wood grain. I thought it was so modern and sleek - boy how times have changed! If I saw someone using my old cellular phone, which was the size of a brick, by the way, I would feel sorry for them. The new LG G4 is thin, sleek and slightly curved for the palm of your hand.
Oh, and did you notice that awesome leather back? That's not a phone case, that's the actual phone itself! The LG G4 is available in black or brown leather and metallic or ceramic craft backs. All of the buttons for power and volume are right on the back and worked into the design of the phone.
The 5.5” IPS Quantum display on the new G4 is bright, colorful and provides great contrast. I was actually a little shocked when I started scrolling through my Instagram feed because the photos were so crisp and clear!
One of the things I noticed almost immediately is that while the LG G4 isn't that much larger than my current smartphone, the screen seems much larger. The display reaches almost all the way to the edges of the phone, providing the largest display I've seen on a mid-sized phone.
User Tip: To take a screenshot, you can either simultaneously press down the power button and the volume down button or drag down your Quick Memo from the top of the screen and save the screenshot to your gallery. I find that it's easier to use the Quick Memo method, you can even annotate on the screenshot before saving it to your gallery!
The LG G4 has a powerful camera! As you know, I my travel photography is a huge part of my blog and social media presence. I absolutely must have a great camera either on my phone or in my pocket at all times. For a while now, I've been carrying two phones - one for taking photos and one for everything else...but I think that might come to an end with the LG G4 - yes, the camera is that good!
LG G4 features a f/1.8 low light lens. The lens on the G4 is the first in the US with f/1.8 aperture. If you aren't used to using a DSLR, this particular aperture provides faster shutter speeds and sharper, clearer images regardless of lighting.
Shoot in automatic or manual mode - The use of manual mode allows you to adjust your settings just like you would on a DSLR to ensure that every shot comes out just the way you want it.
Of course, the phone still takes crisp, clear and vibrant photos in automatic mode. Which, let's face it: most of my travel photos are taken in a few seconds as I'm walking past something, so I mainly use the automatic mode.
It has a 16 MP ½.6” image sensor - When it comes to mobile photography, the more pixels, the better! You'll see more detail in your photos and because of the high-performance sensor, photos will be crisp and clear; you'll even see better quality in the photos when you zoom in!
The Color Spectrum Sensor - Have you ever taken a photo with your smartphone, but when you went to upload it to Instagram, you realized that the colors weren't as vibrant as they were in real life? Well, I am not a fan of using filters on my photos, so that drives me batty! The LG G4 helps to achieve more accurate color and reproduction with improved white balance.
Laser auto focus & optical image stabilization - You can take a quick shot with a simply double tap of the rear button, and the laser auto focus allows the camera to focus in an instant. The optical image stabilization helps to provide you with crystal clear images without worrying too much about camera shake.
Ultra high definition video capture - I am just starting to get into making videos for my blog, and I am so excited about seeing clearer videos with the LG G4.
8 MP / Gesture Control / Selfie Light - I have never been a big selfie-taker, but hey, sometimes even I like to show off a new haircut or a particularly happy moment on social media. I've always balked at the quality of forward-facing cameras on smartphones but the LG G4 has an 8 megapixel camera as well as special selfie lighting and gesture control - ensuring that every selfie takes your breath away! Let's think about this for a moment; the LG G4's forward-facing camera has the same megapixels as the MAIN camera on my current primary smartphone...
