The Ultimate Back-to-School Shopping Guide

As summer winds down, parents and students both begin to think about the return to school. While most kids probably aren’t very excited to hit the books instead of the snooze button, mom and dad may be more than ready to see their kids off at the bus stop. One of the biggest task for parents when getting ready for school to start is the dreaded back-to-school shopping, especially when children have strong opinions about what they want to wear this year. Thanks to some quality brands, such as Dickies, back to school clothes shopping doesn’t have to be complicated.

Preparation

It may be tempting to hit the store without thinking about what to purchase beforehand, but when shopping with children a little preparation can go a long way. Before heading out, it is a good idea to create a budget. Including the child in this can help them understand how much will be spent on them and why a parent may have to tell him or her no for a certain item. When parents and children agree ahead of time about some of the items to be purchased, the child may be more excited to wear the clothes and feel special in them.

Buying Guide

With planning and preparation completed, it is time to create a master list of items to be purchased. Most children need to stock up on the basics, with the addition of a few fun pieces that are stylish and interesting. Thinking about what a child has grown out of and what they will need this year is a good place to start. Try to include the following:

• Underwear – Purchasing about 10 pairs ensures that a clean pair is almost always available to wear to school.
• Socks – For families with multiple children, purchasing distinctive styles of socks with colors or patterns to set them apart can help avoid confusion for parent and child.
• T-shirts – Several basic t-shirts are inexpensive and can double as a base layer when the weather turns cold. Because of their low cost, t-shirts are a great way to incorporate trends into a child’s wardrobe.
• Sweaters – Light layers are an effective way to keep a child warm without taking up too much space in the classroom.
• Pants – Jeans and casual pants are worn quite frequently, so purchasing at least three pairs can keep them from becoming worn out as quickly.
• Skirts – Many girls enjoy wearing dresses or skirts to school, but it is important that they wear shorts underneath if there is not one built in already.
• Shoes – A pair of sneakers and another dressier option should be enough to last throughout the school year. Velcro fasteners are the best choice for young children who do not know how to tie shoes yet.
• Boots – Cold climates often require boots to protect little feet against rain or snow. Choose a sturdy pair that has adequate traction.
• Outerwear – If weather is an issue, hats, gloves, and coats should be on the shopping list as well.

Armed with a list of everything a child could need for back-to-school, parents are ready to tackle to experience and feel confident in their abilities.
