Growing up in Hurricane Alley (yes, that’s a real thing), I know all about the benefits of shelf safe milk.
It is part of our annual summer tradition to stock up on hurricane supplies at the beginning of June, just in case a storm hits. One of the most important items on our hurricane preparedness shopping list is always cereal and shelf safe milk, because these are things that we can still use and enjoy if we are spared a storm and our hurricane supplies go unused.
There are so many benefits to shelf safe milk. Not only is it perfect for storing in case of a natural disaster, or just to free up valuable space in your fridge, but it is a great way to include a healthy dairy in food drives and donations to shelters, and taking along on road trips with the family when you don’t have access to a cooler!
Shelf safe milk has eight grams of protein and nine essential nutrients, including calcium, A, D and B12, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, riboflavin, niacin and zinc. Shelf safe milk is actually real milk, and it doesn’t have the additives or preservatives you find in sodas, juices and teas.
Shelf safe milk doesn’t require refrigeration until it has been opened, so you can take along individual servings to drink on trips or even bring along a carton to put in the fridge once you arrive at your destination!
I love this idea of bringing it along on road trips, because Angeline gets so tired of water and I really try to limit the amount of teas and sodas that she drinks. She can even bring along a single serving of cereal and have cereal in the car with the shelf safe milk! It is also perfect for including in her lunch bags, since the lines are so long during lunchtime at her high school. We can freeze the single serving box over night and then it will be thawed and still cold by lunchtime! And if she doesn’t get around to drinking it, it’s no biggie because it won’t go bad unless it’s been opened!
Is shelf safe milk real milk?
YES! Shelf safe milk is real milk! It is created through a unique combination of pasteurizing milk at an ultra high temperature and packaging it in a Tetra Pak carton. Ultra-pasteurization eliminates bacteria and Tetra Pak carton packaging keeps out light, air and harmful contaminants. The result is real, Grade A milk that does not need to be refridgerated until the container is opened!
Shelf safe milk has actually been around since the 1960s and is available in a wide variety of options; you can buy conventional or organic, there are flavors like regular, vanilla, strawberry and chocolate!
