Becoming a parent is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. It’s a life changing decision that will definitely stir up various emotions, and you’ll likely experience some bumps in the road on your journey to parenthood. However, you must be sure you’re ready to become a parent before you take the leap. Simply wanting a baby is not enough; you must want one for the right reasons.
Here are the signs you can look for that tell you you’re ready to become a parent:
You Won’t Mind What You Have As Long As They Are Healthy
You shouldn’t have your heart set on what you want if you’re going to step into healthy parenthood. For instance, saying you want a little girl with blonde hair and blue eyes is a little unrealistic. Why do they have to have a certain hair color, or even be a certain sex? As long as they are healthy, you should be happy.
You’re In A Stable Relationship
Now, this is a little controversial, but stick with us. You don’t necessarily need to be in a relationship to have a baby. You could adopt, if you feel ready alone, for instance. You can also use a service like ConceiveAbilities if you are unable to conceive alone. There are plenty of options for singletons who would really like a baby. That being said, a stable relationship can be beneficial for a child. Having two parents who love them more than anything will do them the world of good. The one thing you should not do, is have a baby because you think it will ‘fix’ your relationship. Even if you have a good relationship, the both of you absolutely have to be ready to have a baby. You can’t just have your heart set on your partner becoming ready once you announce the pregnancy, and then get upset when they freak out.
You’re Prepared To Sacrifice Your Time And Sleep
A baby means sacrificing a lot - especially your time, and your sleep. It’s nice to take beautiful pictures of your baby and perhaps even document them on your social media channels, however, this shouldn’t be your main concern. Don't be surprised if you barely have time for social media in the beginning. You will be sacrificing a lot of your time to bathe, feed, and play with your baby. You’ll also have a very inconsistent sleeping pattern. Sometimes they may sleep through the night, but don’t get your hopes up. Many babies start out like this and then end up regressing as they get older!
You Don’t Feel Pressured Because Of Your Age
Being a certain age does not mean you have to have a baby. Perhaps you feel your biological clock is ticking. That doesn’t mean you are ready. Don’t do anything because society, or your peers say that you should. Do it because you want to and it’s the right decision for you.
You’re Prepared For Difficulties A Baby Can Present
A baby will present many difficulties. You’ll likely have less time for hobbies and things you once loved to do. Your relationship with your partner could potentially suffer as you both get into a new routine. Your body may change, and it may take some getting used to. Make sure you do your research and you’re more than prepared for all of these difficulties.
You’re Financially Stable
Having enough money to support yourself and a child is also important. You may be entitled to help, but the last thing you want is to struggle to buy food when you have a small mouth to feed. You may need to make some sacrifices. You may not be able to go on as many dates, or buy clothes.
You Know How To Take Care Of Yourself
Taking care of yourself is still important when you have a baby. Staying clean and feeling good about yourself is important. Your baby will also learn a lot from you about how to care for themselves as they get older. You’re setting an example!
You’re Open To Learning, Changing, And Growing
As a parent, you won’t always get it right, or be perfect. It’s silly and unrealistic to believe that you will. You must be open to learning, changing, and growing if you're going to be the best parent you can possibly be.
You Have A Great Support System In Place
A great support system is a must, as it’s easy to feel alone as a new parent. Do you have people you can talk to?
