It's no coincidence that February is Heart Health Month. The shelves of stores are stocked with heart shaped candy, decorations, and gifts. The heart is often seen as the symbol of love. When you're surprising your sweetie with something special, remember to show yourself love and ensure your heart is as healthy as can be. General Mills is helping promote Heart Health Month by offering products and recipes as part of maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women and men in the United States. Let that sink in. Number one. This includes heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. All of which prevent Americans nationwide from work and other activities. The cost of health care services and medications skyrocket, the United States spends over 300 billion dollars each year on them.
Luckily there are many ways to reduce your chances of suffering from cardiovascular disease, and they aren't very difficult to do, either! Of course, you should seek the assistance of a physician for any existing heart conditions, but these tips are great for us regular folks who just want a bit of preventative maintenance.
Limit high fat foods. Yes, you can have a donut but you don't need one every morning!
Get moving! Exercise on a regular basis improves your overall quality of life and keeps your heart strong. Even a simple walk is beneficial to your overall health and especially to your heart. Grab your spouse, children, dog, neighbor or any combination of those and get active. There is strength in numbers.
Quit smoking. It greatly increases your chances for cardiovascular disease.
Limit alcohol. It can lead to high blood pressure, a glass of wine is fine now and then.
Eat balanced meals. Meals that are full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy is a great start and can also help you reduce your cholesterol.
General Mills has a fantastic line of whole grain products that fit easily into a balanced menu. Some of those tasty products are:
- Gluten Free Chex Granola Mix in Honey Nut and Mixed Berry flavors
- Cheerios + Ancient Grains
- Nature Valley Nut Crisp Bars in Salted Caramel Peanut and Almond Dark Chocolate flavors
