Saturday Night is Girl’s Night In! #CBias #CouchCritics #FamilyMeals

While my husband is traveling for work, things tend to get a little boring around the house for Angeline and I. We spend a lot of time together on a day to day basis, but it’s not always “quality time.” I think we get so caught up in the routine of waking up, getting ready for school, making breakfast, homework, etc, etc, that we haven’t really enjoyed each other’s company in a while.

So this weekend, we decided to do something a little different. We put away the laptops, iphones, ipads (wow, we have a lot of technology to put away!) and had an old fashioned dinner and a movie night – just us girls.

We started by checking out the Walmart Meal Solutions app for Facebook. It’s a really cool app that features a different recipe every day – and they are all really easy to make with just a few ingredients. My favorite part? They are all created around the concept of using convenience foods; for instance, our BBQ chicken sandwiches dinner last night; the ingredients were a rotisserie chicken, BBQ sauce, onions, buns & microwavable corn. All super easy to put together – it literally took us about 10 minutes to make dinner. We chose the shredded BBQ chicken sandwich dinner because it was incredibly simple and I knew I could get Angeline to help me cook it without any argument – which meant more one-on-one time with her!

I went ahead and “liked” the app so that I will receive a new recipe every day! As I was looking through, I found that they had a ton of options, with recipes ranging from vegetarian sandwiches to banana puddings! This is definitely something I will use again and again. I even shared it with my friends on Facebook so that they can take advantage of it too!

It was really nice making dinner together. We chatted while making the food and laughed at our dogs as they begged for chicken.

While we were shopping at Walmart for our groceries (and a few other things that caught our eye) we stopped at the Red Box and picked up Rio on DVD. You really can’t go wrong with $1 movie rentals! And since Red Box has locations practically all over Miami, I can pick up a movie while I am at Walmart and return it at the drugstore next to my house the next day!

There’s something to be said for sitting on the sofa in your pajamas with your daughter, eating popcorn and watching a movie. We get so busy in the hustle and bustle of everyday life that sometimes we lose that connection that is so important between a mother and her daughter. This night really allowed us to have fun together, talk about things we don’t normally talk about (boys! eek!) and just reconnect.

Rio was an adorable movie. If you haven’t seen it yet, you really should check it out – it’s rated G and totally appropriate for children but it’s funny enough for adults. I laughed quite a few times at the silly antics of the birds! Rio had a really sweet message about falling in love, finding yourself and in my opinion, freedom. Rio was really cute, showing two birds from opposite worlds falling in love, Blu gaining his independence and learning how much he was missing out on by being someone’s pet, and even his owner found love in the movie! I personally love movies with positive messages – and Rio definitely had that.

I think that family movie night needs to become a family tradition!

I love girls night in. My daughter and I spent a night watching a movie and eating popcorn in our tent (we were camping in the Badlands). That was one of my most favorite nights of our trip.

Walmart Meal Solutions App. Hey, if that app can solve my dinner dilemmas I’m in 🙂

Looks like a great time – I think it’s good to do that every now and then. I love it when I visit my parents and have no access to internet — even the cell phones barely work! Great way to unplug!
