WARNING: This post contains major spoilers!

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Robert Downey Jr, and that I love all things Iron Man-related. So it should come as no surprise when I sat down to write this Iron Man 3 review the first thing I typed was “This is the best movie I have seen all year” – in fact, it’s the best movie I’ve seen since Marvel’s The Avengers last year.

Seriously.

I had the privilege of attending the Iron Man 3 red carpet premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood last week, and you might laugh, but I was just as excited to see Iron Man 3 as I was to walk the red carpet. I love Iron Man THAT MUCH!

iron man 3 red carpet premiere

I knew going in what the movie was going to be about, having read the official boiler plate and having seen the Iron Man 3 trailers so many times…but as happens with every really good movie – the trailers just didn’t do Iron Man 3 justice! Even now as I am trying to share my Iron Man 3 review with you, I have a hard time coming up with the words to express just how amazing it was!

I love action movies, and Iron Man 3 was almost non-stop action. We’re talking explosive action scenes – both figuratively and literally!

Want a little romance? The love story between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts in in Iron Man 3 was so heartfelt, so endearing, that I actually cried at one point…

And the comedy? Where did that come from? I laughed so hard that my cheeks hurt and I almost choked on my popcorn.

Iron Man 3 is a little different from the first two movies, it’s a bit darker, a bit more morose, yet at the same time, there’s a sense of humor throughout the movie that provides a nice sense of balance.

iron man 3 review

Iron Man 3 begins with Tony Stark working on a new Iron Man suit – the MK 42.

We watch as Tony struggles with the aftermath of what happened in New York (think back to Marvel’s The Avengers)…he says “Nothing’s been the same since New York” and we feel that, we feel his dread for what may happen if the “aliens” should decide to invade again…let’s just say that he’s not sleeping.

iron man 3 review

Iron Man 3 is full of memorable quotes, one of my favorites being: I’m Tony Stark. I build neat stuff, got a great girl, occasionally save the world. So why can’t I sleep?

In Iron Man 3, Tony and Pepper’s relationship has taken on a new seriousness – she’s now living with Tony and running Stark Industries. He isn’t giving Pepper the attention she deserves, and when a new threat hits the United States, in the form of the terrorist The Mandarin, we watch as Tony Stark, full of arrogance and distraction, announces to The Mandarin in typical Tony Stark fashion, “come and get me.”

And that he does! Just as Tony’s former lover, the brilliant scientist Maya Hanson pays them a visit to talk about the Mandarin’s weaponry, the Mandarin sends his men – and their weapons – after Tony Stark. We watch explosion after explosion, and it seems that all of the Iron Man suits are being destroyed, and then the unthinkable happens. As the building is collapsing, it seems as it is coming down right on top of Pepper and Tony – and then he commands the Mark 42 Iron Man suit to go to her and we watch in slow motion as it completely encases her.

Totally awesome.

This is the scene in the trailer where we see Pepper protect Tony from falling concrete and she tells him, “I got you” and he replies ‘I got you first.” I am kind of tearing up just thinking about it! It was such a powerful moment!

Pepper and the scientist manage to get to safety and somehow Tony ends up at the bottom of the ocean outside his home, trapped beneath rubble from the explosions and it looks as though all is lost…but of course Mark 42 comes to save Tony and we see him fly off into the sky. He lands in a small town where Tony meets a young boy, a bit of a latchkey kid who immediately identifies with Tony.

This is the first time a child has been involved in the plot of an Iron Man movie, and it adds an entirely new dimension to the movie! Watching Robert Downey Jr interact with young Ty Simpkins in Iron Man 3 is hilarious but also heart warming; and we watch as he helps Tony recover and come up with a plan to take down the Mandarin.

And that’s when things get really interesting! Tony figures out what type of weaponry the Mandarin is using and begins to plan a course of action. Assuming that Tony is dead, the Mandarin and his cohorts set their sights on gaining control of Rhodey’s Iron Patriot suit (formerly the War Machine) and taking down Air Force One, thus taking control of the White House…and it almost works.

Tony goes after the Mandarin, and because I don’t want to give away everything in the movie, let me just say that he isn’t exactly what Tony expected.

We watch as Tony and Rhodey fight in such an intense, action-packed scene and at the end…

Let’s just say that there’s a happy ending. I’ll end my Iron Man 3 review there because you don’t want to know everything that happens in the movie, do you?

iron man 3 review

I received complimentary admission to Iron Man 3, but all opinions are my own. My travel, accommodations and activities during the #IronMan3Event were paid for by Disney but I would have written this Iron Man 3 review anyway!
