Sometimes a relative will ask you what you want for the holidays and you don't want them to buy you expensive or extravagant gifts, so you tell them a practical item that is easy to find. It is always something you know you will use so you can avoid ugly holiday sweaters and odd smelling perfumes that you are obligated to wear whenever you see the person you received it from. When my husband and I first started dating I told my grandma I wanted a new trashcan for Christmas, to which she said "Really? A trashcan?" I replied "Yes, I really want a new trashcan. In fact , it is all I want." My clueless new boyfriend was inspired by that, he thought I really did want a new trashcan, so off he went to a Hardware store to find me a big silver trashcan.
Imagine how surprised I was that my grandma didn't take the bait. She gave me towels instead of the requested trashcan, but when I returned to my apartment there was a huge silver trashcan with a bow on it beside my tree. He was so proud of himself. He gave me what he heard me tell my grandma I really wanted. I smiled, I thought it was cute... my smile faded when I realized he was serious, he got me a trashcan for Christmas.
What an awkward moment. Never give a trashcan (or anything you can buy at the Hardware store for a special lady) for Christmas! If your thoughts travel to a gift like a trashcan, stop. Go to Gift Card Mall and give a gift card and save yourself from an awkward gifting moment! You might feel that giving a gift card is a boring gift, but it doesn't have to be, you can customize your gift cards for a unique experience and gift cards are a lot more fun to receive than a trashcan.
If you’re still thinking of what to get people this holiday season, just remember you want them to KEEP your gift and not RETURN it. Help yourself #Givebetter by giving a gift card. Avoid those awkward gifting moments.

That reminds me of the year my husband bought me a crockpot. I like the crockpot well enough, but not exactly what I'd expect as a gift. 🙂

I always get gift cards for my nieces.

I love to give gift cards because I love to GET gift cards! It's a fun excuse to actually go shopping for myself.
