I've always been a book worm, but my daughter never acquired my passion for reading. As my nieces and nephew have begun to grow up (they are 10, 4 and 2.5 at the moment), I have spoken with my sister many times about how to instill a love of reading in them from an early age.
I am a little jealous at her success - all of her kids love to read or be read to, especially the little ones! I think that the fun, interactive technology that children have today plays a big part in making reading more interesting to little ones. With all of the fun learning apps on iPhones and iPads, kids can learn to read while having fun - and associating reading with fun is what will keep them reading, long after they outgrow reading apps on the iPad!
The newest iPad app I've learned about is The Lion And The Mouse By Kid-mind Studios, which is geared towards children 4 and up.
The The Lion and The Mouse is a beautifully animated, completely interactive storybook that tells the all time classic fable in a new way that young children are sure to love! I showed my 4 year old nephew The Lion and the Mouse iPad app briefly at our Friday night family dinner and he loved it! He loved being able to swipe the pages to move to the next one - just like an adult's book in an electronic reader!
The Lion and The Mouse blurs the line between being an animation and picture book - it is animated and the characters move along the story line as it is read like a cartoon! There are 33 exceptionally animated scenes, and over 30 different interactions and several mini games, so there really is unlimited entertainment with The Lion and The Mouse app!
The Lion and The Mouse iPad app features beautiful pictures and mini games, with lively animations and interactions on each page. On some parts of the story, the children need to take action to move it along, whether it be by swiping the page as they finished reading each one or by guiding the Mouse down a tunnel to get to the next place by slowly tilting the iPad back and forth and then sliding their finger to show the mouse where to go.
Not only are children learning to read and enjoying the fun game, but they are using their fine motor skills by utilizing the touch screen on the iPad!
The Lion and The Mouse iPad app is so cute! Beautifully designed graphics, carefully composed music and subtle sound effects of the jungle will ensure a relaxing experience for children and adults alike. While the app is great to use any time of day, you can play with it in the evenings and not worry about it riling up your children. If anything, the softness of the music may help them get more relaxed and ready for bedtime. One can hope, am I right?
I love the way each word in the story is highlighted as it is read aloud in the app, it is a great way for children to stay on pace and learn each word as they are "reading" the story! The story is read at a slow and steady pace so that little ones can easily keep up. There are 3 different reading modes so that you and your children can find the method of reading that works best for your family. Also, the native pronunciation and special “tap-to-listen” feature ensures accurate English learning.
I recommend The Lion and The Mouse for your little ones! You can play with the characters, play with the story modes and play with the languages - The Lion and The Mouse is available in 5 different languages: English, Mandarin, French, Spanish and Cantonese. I can definitely see this iPad app not only helping your children learn to love reading but providing hours of entertainment and fun!
This is one book your children won't want to put down any time soon!
Fine Details: The Lion and The Mouse app is currently $2.99 in the iTunes store and is compatible with iPad.Requires iOS 5.0 or later.

I used to be a big time book worm when I was a kid. Then when the internet came along I turned to reading e-books! I have been a bookwork lately with the kindle reading The Hunger Games triology.

My daughter is too old for these type of apps, but when I reviewed a few the younger kids loved them. The animation looks like it would keep a child entertained for sure.
