One of the things I didn't realize I would miss in the divorce is a sense of security. I don't mean financial security, or security in knowing that there was someone beside me...I mean home security. I live in a relatively safe neighborhood, but there is an element of insecurity being newly single in your home. Suddenly there is no one to investigate bumps in the night or the reassurance that someone else was home holding down the fort during my frequent travels.
The idea of purchasing a security system brought about peace of mind, but the hefty start up cost and monthly fees certainly did not - especially considering that I was living on a single income for the first time in my adult life. Then there is the fact that most security systems are really only good for security. What about all of the other things that can go wrong at the most inopportune times? The water leak that happens in the middle of the night, or the door I forgot to lock before leaving on a trip. What I really need is a smart home - or at least something to smarten up my home, like Notion.
Notion is an all in one sensor that can notify you if doors are open, the sink is leaking, or a smoke alarm is going off - all from your phone! So whether I'm traveling across the world, or just sleeping thru the night, it could let me know everything that is happening within my home. The best part is that it doesn't require any installation. Set up takes about 10 minutes and just requires you to plug in the bridge (the part that communicates with the sensors thru AES 256-bit encryption), connect to Wi-Fi and then just attach a sensor to anything you would want to monitor.
It actually gets even better because you don't have to use a different sensor for each task. One sensor has 8 different sensors built in so they can monitor anything.
- Be notified if a door has been opened, or check what its status is, open or closed. The same goes for your garage door.
- Notify you if a sliding door or window has been opened.
- Receive notifications if there is a water leak in your basement, bathroom, or under your sink or dishwasher.
- Place a sensor next to a smoke alarm and be notified if the smoke alarm is sounding.
- Set temperature thresholds to get notified if the basement is getting so cold that the pipes could freeze, or your wine room is getting a too warm.
From there it's just a matter of customizing notifications to only receive them when you’re away, or at night, or for temperature sensors, only when it gets too hot or cold. Eventually, Notion will even be able to integrate with Nest and IFTTT. Imagine being able to monitor and control your home from just about anywhere!
