Do it Yourself (DIY) is a popular concept that can translate into any part of your life. Whether it’s making your own home decorations, or learning how to sew your own clothes, there’s simply something about that sense of fulfillment that anyone could appreciate. I for one don’t necessarily have the artistic talent to crochet my own scarf (trust me, I’ve tried and it wasn’t pretty) for the winter time, but I often enjoy the pleasantries of sewing my own curtains or pillow shams to bring a room to life.
Not much of a do it yourselfer? Maybe these reasons might convince you to pick up a new skill.
- Cost Effective
At the top of the list is the cost effectiveness of completing simple projects on your own. Whether you’re hard up for cash or not, often the cost of purchasing your own materials and making it yourself can be a lot more affordable than going to store or hiring a professional. For example, I wanted to change around my living room décor a little bit. The curtains I had were a bit worn down so I decided to make my own. When I went to the store, the curtains I wanted would cost me about $15 per panel. I had four living room windows which would mean I required eight panels for a total of $120.
However, by going bargain shopping at a fabric store, I was able to find similar fabric at a discounted price of about $4 per yard. I’d need about 1 ½ yards of fabric for each panel. So that meant each panel would cost about $6. With four windows, that meant I needed 8 panels which totaled $48.
- Customizable and Unique
Cost is not the only reason that DIY has become so popular; there is also the fact that you have creative control. How many times have you gone shopping for clothing or home décor and found something – but not quite what you wanted? Maybe you like the style of a shirt but want it in a color they don’t have. Or maybe you’re interested in a particular curtain, but would prefer a different pattern on it? When you choose to make your own, you’re in control of how it turns out from beginning to end. And what’s more is that no one else will have it… so you get to stand out from the rest.
- Gives You a Sense of Pride and Creativity
I remember the first time I made my own quilt for my bed. I had no real idea on how to sew one, so I studdied sewing for beginners and found a tutorial. While I might have earned a few gray hairs trying to complete it, when I finally did, there was a sense of pride and accomplishment that I really enjoyed. The feeling of completing something all on your own can do wonders for your psyche. You feel creative, accomplished, and all around pleased with your work.
- Potentially Lucrative
If the above factors didn’t convince you that DIY could be the way to go with clothing and home décor projects, this one just might. According to Entrepreneur, a love of sewing or craft making could be turned into a lucrative career. Whether you decide to teaching sewing classes, or create your own crafts and sell them online, you could essentially make a decent living doing something you love. Home based businesses are generally very inexpensive to launch and can be done on a full or part time basis, depending on your interests.
At the end of the day, there are so many resources, guides, tutorials, and videos out there, that everyone can become more self reliant and complete their own craft, décor and clothing projects from the comfort of their own home. So whether you want to cut back on spending, stand out from the rest, find a sense of accomplishment, or earn more income, doing it yourself provides many benefits that should really be considered.
