We all love to be entertained in our spare time and modern life gives us many ways to keep boredom at bay. From TV to movies, social media and music streaming services, you will always have something to stay busy with. For many people though, heading out to catch a show at the theatre cannot be beaten. It is easy to see why – with the bright lights, cool songs, amazing productions and showbiz pizazz, you will always enjoy going to the theatre. Even the more downbeat, serious plays are worth catching for the acting on offer and the new perspectives they can offer on things.

If you are a theatre lover, then the East Coast of America is sure to float your boat. This region is home to many fabulous cities that make theatre a real part of what they offer. If you are thinking of taking a trip here to see some shows, the below are the best places to head.

Life is a cabaret: What are the East Coast’s best theatrical locations?

New York

When it comes to East Coast theatre in the US, the Big Apple still reigns supreme. Of course, the Broadway district is the place to check out when you arrive there. You will see lots of big-name shows from people including world class producer Louise Gund. Broadway is a name that is known for theatre across the globe for good reason. It is not only home to the biggest shows but also the biggest names. At any one time here, you will have a wide selection of performances to take in with some of the most talented actors from stage and screen. New York is also a great place to spend time in and there are lots of comfortable options for accommodation too.

Philadelphia

The great thing about many of the best East Coast cities to indulge your love for theatre in is how close they all are. Philly is a case in point with both New York and Washington D.C. close by. This makes taking all three in on your trip simple. Philly is certainly worth a visit and is actually one of the oldest places for theatre you will find. The Walnut Street Theatre here has been going for 200 years non-stop which gives you an idea of the history it has. As well as superb shows put on by local companies like Arden, there is also the annual Live Arts festival and Philly Fringe to consider catching.

Washington D.C.

Another place that should be high up on your list of to visit places is D.C. Not only can you catch the usual tourist things like the White House but you will love the arts scene here. This is actually a scene that has grown lots recently and has much to offer. Fans of the bard will love the plays performed by the Shakespeare Theatre Company while the Wooly Mammoth company offer something more contemporary. There are great theatres to check out here too and you will dig the annual American College Theatre festival if you are around to watch it.

Boston

A little further up America’s East Coast, we have Boston in Massachusetts. The biggest draw here is the lively regional theatre scene which has a wide array of theatres to visit either in Boston or close by. They play host to some old classics and some more contemporary work, depending on what you like. From the Lyric to the Speakeasy, the Huntington and beyond, there is always a show or play on to watch. Local companies include the Merrimack Rep and can always be counted on to produce the goods. For a small city and state, this packs a big punch and also has a great food scene too.

Staunton

Found in the state of Virginia, Staunton is not a name you may have heard of before for theatre. It is definitely one to take in on any trip though especially for fans of the classics. Staunton is home to the American Shakespeare Center who put on plays by the man himself as well as his contemporaries like Marlowe and Jonson. You will love the playhouse these are all performed in with its old-world charm and also the Shakespeare Lab tour they run. Staunton itself is a lovely town to spend time in and you will certainly get a warm welcome here.

Put on the old razzle dazzle

Theatre is a big part of life for many people and the East Coast is a great place to head if this includes you. With so many superb locations which are home to grand playhouses and talented companies, you will always find something amazing to take in. Of course, if you have never visited the East Coast before then you can also turn it into a holiday. This will not only make it a truly memorable trip but also give you extra time to enjoy the theatre there with.
